Michigan tops the USFL division, with two clubs at 1-and-1, and the other two winless. San Antonio Brahmas Analysis

After a solid 7-and-3 season in 2024, that led San Antonio to the UFL Championship game (where they lost 25-0 to Birmingham), things have gone off the rails to start 2025 for the Brahmas. They’ve lost both contests by counts of 33-9 to Arlington in Week 1, and 26-9 to St. Louis in Week 2.

Offensively, the Brahmas have a meager 18 total points so far, with QB Kellen Mond failing to throw a touchdown pass. The running game has actually been very solid, as the Brahmas lead the league with a 5.6 yards-per-carry average, though there have only been two times finding paydirt for the backs. Despite that, their overall struggles led to their OC A.J. Smith stepping down after just two games, which is less than ideal obviously.

The fatal flaw in the early going for the Brahmas has been the wretched defense that has given up a league-worst 59 points. They’ve surrendered the second-most yards per game in the league, and have one paltry sack. They’ve been totally gashed on the ground, conceding seven rushing TD’s and 347 yards on the ground. Suffice to say, it’s been grisly thus far in the Lone Star State.

Michigan Panthers Analysis

The Michigan Panthers got out to a strong start to their campaign, with a Week 1 26-12 whipping at the hands of the Memphis Showboats. Quarterback Bryce Perkins had a strong performance, going 16-for-19 for 163 yards and a TD pass. He also scampered into the end zone with his legs, kicking off a great start to the season.

They stumbled after that in Week 2, however, losing 21-12 to Birmingham. In that affair, Perkins was just 12-for-23 for 132 yards and one TD and INT. The Stallions sacked the Panthers three times, had four tackles for loss, a pick, and a fumble recovery. Still, through two outings, their 38 points are the most in the USFL division.

Interestingly, the Panthers had zero sacks against Birmingham, which is a bad sign, but they were able to force two interceptions in that game.

Brahmas vs Panthers Prediction

I do believe the Panthers will end up taking this contest, but I definitely feel ill having to wager them at -290 on the moneyline. Despite losing both of their games, the Brahmas can rely on their stout running game, and if they can just get a halfway decent defensive effort, they could make it a game.

I’d like to think San Antonio can keep this within a TD score, but their -41 point differential through two battles doesn’t suggest they’ll be able to do that. To get a little bit more value on a Panthers wager, I like them to cover the 6.5 point spread, which pays out a better price than selecting them on the moneyline.

  • Brahmas vs Panthers Pick: Panthers -6.5 (-110)
