Bruins vs Red Wings Betting Analysis

This matchup features two slumping teams – Boston on a four-game skid, Detroit having dropped two straight. Despite their struggles, the Bruins have beaten the Wings twice at Little Caesars Arena this season (5-3 and 2-1).

YouTube video

The advanced stats tell the real story. Over their last 10 games, Detroit has dominated in expected goals (54.10% xGF% vs Boston’s 39.99%) and high-danger chances (99 vs 60). The Wings also have a significant goaltending advantage with Talbot (.925 SV%) significantly outperforming Swayman (.883 SV%) recently.

Special teams contrast sharply: Detroit boasts the NHL’s 3rd-ranked power play (28.7%) but struggles with the league’s worst penalty kill (68.9%). Boston’s power play has been abysmal (14.7%, 29th) while their penalty kill sits at 76.7%. With the Bruins taking the 5th-most penalties league-wide, look for Detroit’s lethal power play to be the difference-maker.

The betting trends heavily favor the Over. The total has gone OVER in 5 of Boston’s last 6 games in Detroit and in 7 of the Wings’ last 10 home games overall.

Player props worth watching: Lucas Raymond has scored in three consecutive home games and has three goals in his last two against Boston. Patrick Kane has hit his shots total Over in six of nine games and recorded seven shots in his last two against the Bruins.

Boston has been dreadful against the spread at 6-20 ATS, while Detroit isn’t much better at 9-15 ATS. Both teams have been reliable Over machines – Detroit games have topped the 6-goal total in 58.3% of their matchups (42 of 72) and Boston’s games have gone over 6 goals in 50.7% (37 of 73).

Bruins vs Red Wings Prediction & Pick

While the Bruins have owned this matchup recently, their current form is too concerning to back them with confidence. Boston’s road record is abysmal, and they’ve struggled to generate offense consistently all season (2.63 goals/game, 29th in NHL).

Detroit’s power play could be the difference-maker tonight. With Boston taking the 5th-most penalties in the league (10:09 PIM/game), the Red Wings’ lethal power play should get plenty of opportunities to convert. Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin have been productive lately and should capitalize against Boston’s struggling defense.

Looking at both teams’ recent performances and the underlying metrics, I expect the Red Wings to take this one by a score of 4-2. Detroit has generated significantly better scoring chances over their last 10 games, and their power play efficiency should be the difference maker tonight.

Both teams have been deplorable since late February, but at least Detroit still has something to play for with their faint playoff hopes, which should give them the edge in what might be a scrappy, low-scoring affair.

Saturday NHL Picks:

  • Red Wings ML (-157)
  • Lucas Raymond Anytime Goalscorer (+225)
