The #11 Drake Bulldogs (31-3) have won eight straight games, having taken the MVC Tournament Final over the Bradley Braves, then upsetting the sixth seeded Missouri Tigers 67-57 in the March Madness first round. They’re in tough, however, as they square off versus the 26-8 Texas Tech Red Raiders, who advanced to the second round by defeating the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks 82-72.

Saturday’s college basketball odds have the Red Raiders as favorites in this tilt. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:10pm ET at Intrust Bank Arena, in Wichita, Kansas with TNT providing the broadcast coverage in the United States and TSN in Canada.

Drake vs Texas Tech Analysis

This game should certainly be in the hands of Texas Tech, at least on paper. The -310 odds on the moneyline represent a win probability of 75.61%. However, our SBD model believes it’ll be a tighter battle than that, with Drake vs Texas Tech shaping up to be a 70.5-69.8 close contest, won by Texas Tech, according to the formula. That obviously points to the Bulldogs covering the 7.5 spread, and it being over the listed 126.5 total.

The Red Raiders are 22-5 as the favorite on the moneyline, while Drake is a perfect 7-and-0 as the underdog.

The public has another strong take on the game total, where 64% of O/U handle is on over 126.5. That’s also down from 83% a day ago.

Drake vs Texas Tech Prediction

  • Drake +7.5 (-118)

Drake advanced to the second round of this tournament for the first time 1971 by playing stingy defense against the favored Missouri Tigers. They held their opponents to 23 first-half points to open up a seven-point edge. Drake then held off a strong surge that cut the lead to one before winning by ten. The Bulldogs held their opponents to just 33% from the field, while shooting 54% themselves.

Texas Tech still has injury concerns, particuarly after Chance McMillian missed the opening game. Darrion Williams played with an ankle sprain, but managed just 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting. TTU benefitted from breakout games from Kerwin Walton, who had a career-high 27 points, and Elijah Hawkins, who finished a rebound shy of a triple-double.

It was still tough sledding for the Red Raiders, considering they were 14.5 point favorites over UNC-Wilmington, as they trailed briefly in the second half. They eventually settled down to win by double digits, but looking at the final score doesn’t do justice to how they were in a bit of trouble. The Red Raiders weren’t able to cover the spread.

In the March Madness champion odds, Texas Tech is +3000 to win it all on DraftKings, while Drake are massive +40000 longshots. I do believe things may be a tad more difficult in terms of putting up a lot of points, given some injuries. However, that won’t get in the way of a victory for the favorites.

Discount Drake at your own peril, particularly with how our SBD formula has this game being so tight. It’s probably too tall a task to expect them to go on a Cinderella run, but I think they can keep it close enough to cover the 7.5 point spread.
