Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier (2) and guard Zakai Zeigler (5) celebrate after their victory against Auburn in a Southeastern Conference tournament semifinal game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, March 15, 2025.
  • Tennessee takes on underdog Wofford in the first round of the March Madness on Thursday at 6:50 p.m. ET
  • The #2 Volunteers are heavy favorites. However, a #15 has beaten a #2 in three of the last four NCAA Tournaments
  • I have your Wofford vs Tennessee prediction and picks along with the spread, moneyline and total

The #15 Wofford Terrier (19-15; 16-16 ATS) look for a monster upset when they face the #2 Tennessee Volunteers (27-7; 17-16-1 ATS) in the first round of the Midwest Regional at Rupp Arena on Thursday night (6:50 pm ET). The two schools, separated by 175 miles, have met eight times with Tennessee winning all eight. I have everything you need to know about Wofford vs Tennessee, including a prediction, pick and a look at the best odds.

Wofford vs Tennessee Prediction

The storyline here is not new. Wofford is the underdog coming off a dramatic run in the Southern Conference Tournament where they were the six seed, but then got hot and won the tourney. They have a cool backstory: coach Dwight Perry played for Kentucky, so this is homecoming for him. They have a beefy big man Kyler Filewich who shoots free throws granny style.

Told ya.

Then you have big, bad Tennessee. They were in the SEC Tournament final. They were No. 1 for a big chunk of the season. They’re bigger, longer and better than Wofford.

And that’s why Tennessee is going to win going away. I know, we all love the great Cinderella stories, but Wofford doesn’t match up well with Tennessee at all. Tennessee holds teams to 38 percent shooting from the floor, which is second in the nation. They play the best three-point defense in the nation, and that may be the biggest stat of them all in today’s pace-and-space game.

I did a deep dive here on the Vols as double digit favorites. This season they’re 8-8 against the spread as double digit favorites, but a lot of that came early in the regular season.

This will be the biggest point spread Wofford has faced since they were 24-point ‘dogs to Duke. Uh, Duke beat them by 51.

The Terriers do have a couple of things going for them, first might be Rupp Arena itself. Tennessee played one of its worst games of the year at Rupp, losing to Kentucky 75-64. That was the third fewest points the Vols scored all season. Also Vols coach Rick Barnes has had issues in the first round, losing 11 times before.

But Wofford doesn’t have anyone who can guard Vols star Chaz Lanier or control Igo Milicic inside. I think Tennessee covers the spread by halftime.

There is some difference in the spread, which you might expect. I’ve seen Wofford getting 19.5 at BetRivers, but it’s mostly 18.5 everywhere else. Be smart and stick with the 18.5.

The total is 133.5 everywhere. The best moneyline bet on the Vols is -2000 at Caesars, No, that’s not much value there. Wofford dreamers can get +1400 moneyline at FanDuel or Bet365.

Wofford is 4-1 in its last five games against the spread and five of its last six games have hit the over. The Vols are only 2-5 in their last seven games ATS. Again, the trend is over. The Vols are 4-1 over/under in their last five.

Tennessee allows 63 points a game and scores 74.7. Wofford actually averages more at 75.3. They shoot a lot of threes, but are one of the worst free throw shooting teams in the nation at 66.1 percent.
