It’s only fitting that the top two teams in the conference duke it out in the Big East Conference Tournament final, as the Creighton Bluejays (24-9, 15-5 Big East) battle the St John’s Red Storm (29-4, 18-2 Big East).

The Johnnies have been rolling, with just a single loss in their last 19, while the Bluejays have won four in a row. SJU enters Saturday as the betting favorites when this one tips off at 6:30pm ET from Madison Square Garden in New York. FOX will be carrying the broadcast coverage.

Creighton knocked out 2-time national champ Connecticut 71-62 in the semifinals Friday night to punch their ticket to the tournament final. This, after opening the tourney with an 85-81 2OT marathon victory over DePaul.

They had a couple of unlikely star performances to advance. Senior guard Jamiya Neal tied for the team-high with 19 points, after Neal had finished in single-digit scoring in four of his last six games. Jasen Green went even a step higher, setting a season-best with 19 points, after scoring 21 points total over the previous five games.

The Red Storm have hardly been challenged in the Big East Tournament. They destroyed Marquette 79-63, this after dispatching Butler 78-57. It was a group effort against Butler, with RJ Luis Jr scoring 20, and Aaron Scott and Kadary Richmond chipping in 15 apiece. Against the Golden Eagles, it was a one-man gang, as Zuby Ejiofor dropped a season-best 33 points, with Luis Jr, Scott and Richmond combining for 36 points.

The Red Storm currently own the ninth-best March Madness odds at +2500.

Creighton vs St John’s Prediction

St John’s has been a solid bet of late, going 6-2-0 against the spread during this 8-game winning streak. They have been the betting favorite in all eight.

The Johnnies boast the Big East’s best scoring defense, allowing 66.4 points per game, and rank inside the Top 20 in the nation in field goal defense, holding the opposition to 40% shooting. KenPom has them ranked first in defensive efficiency.

While the Red Storm have been mowing opponents in the Big East Tournament, they’ve had plenty of close games during this 18-1 run. Ten of their games have been settled by single digits, and the John’s own a crisp 9-1 record.

If there is cause for concern, it’s that Creighton is one of the two teams that have hung an L on the Red Storm since Nov 30. The two schools split the season series, starting with the Bluejays winning a 57-56 rockfight on New Year’s Eve.

The Red Storm’s offense was shut down, as they shot 36.8% from the field, including making just 2-for-9 from 3-point range. Also, the top rebounding team in the Big East was a minus-7 on the glass.

St John’s returned the favor on Feb 16, taking a 79-73 decision. Most notable was the Red Storm, ranked first in offensive rebounding in the Big East, ripping 20 offensive boards. They also held the Bluejays to 41.5% shooting from the field, including 8-for-30 from 3-point range, just a 26.7% clip.

Creighton ranks Top 5 in both offensive scoring (75.5 points) and defensive scoring (69.1 points), and KenPom has them inside the Top 40 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.

While they have gone 7-3 in their last 10, the Bluejays have gone just 5-5-0 ATS.

If the Red Storm continues to bring its Grade A defense — they have held four of their last five opponents to 70 points or less — I don’t see their offense seizing up like it did back in December.

Their offense has looked healthy throughout the Big East Tournament, and should be enough to push them into the winner’s circle.

  • Creighton vs St John’s Pick: St John’s -6.5 (-110)

Ryan Kalkbrenner has the highest scoring total for both teams at 19.5 points. He was limited to 12 points against UConn, but that appears to be the outlier in this last stretch, as he had scored 20+ points in his previous five.

He happens to win the highest rebounding prop as well at 9.5, but over his last 10 games, he’s only hit double-digit rebounds three times.

RJ Luis has St John’s highest scoring prop at 18.5 points, and while he had just 13 on a rough 4-for-18 outing against Marquette, he’s consistently been around that number. Luis has topped this figure seven times in his last 11 games.

Creighton’s Steven Ashworth has an assist line of 6.5, one better than Red Storm’s Kadary Richmond. Ashworth is eighth in the nation in assists at 6.8 per game, and he’s gone for seven or more dimes in six of his last 10.
