Connor McDavid and the struggling Oilers (37-23-4) visit the shorthanded Devils (35-25-6) tonight in New Jersey. Edmonton has dropped seven of its last 10 overall, but online sportsbooks are still listing them as road chalk in the NHL odds.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm ET at the Prudential Center, in Newark, NJ, with ESPN+ providing the broadcast coverage.

Oilers vs Devils Prediction

  • New Jersey Devils Moneyline (+130) at Caesars

I get it. It’s uncomfortable to fade McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The former is the best player in the world, while the ladder is the Hart Trophy odds favorite. Draisaitl leads the league in scoring, and is riding a 15-game point streak. There was some talk McDavid might have been injured after the 4 Nations, but he’s looked dynamite recently. The former MVP has multi-point efforts in three of four games coming in.

Nevertheless, my best is on the Devils to pull off the upset, regardless of how well Edmonton’s stars are playing. Yes, New Jersey is down a couple key players. Star forward Jack Hughes is done for the year, while stud d-man Dougie Hamilton is out for a month. However, they’ve found some form recently, and they play a style of hockey that will bottle up the Oilers high-flying attack.

The Devils have won two straight, outscoring their opponents 8-4. Deadline addition Cody Glass helped fill the Hughes void on Tuesday with a pair of assists, while leading scorer Jesper Bratt had a three-point night.

While Edmonton wants to play a back-and-forth game, New Jersey excels at locking things down. The Devils rank second in goals against, fourth in PK percentage and fourth in shots against per game. They get a lead, slow down the pace, and capitalize on over aggressive teams.

The Oilers will be eager to snap their slump, and might be gripping their sticks a hair too tightly. Edmonton has been outscored 42-29 over its past 10 games, and have dropped five of their last six on the road. That includes Monday’s loss in Buffalo, where they fell to a team who hadn’t won in six games.

These two teams played earlier this season, and went precisely as the Devils would have wanted. New Jersey blanked Edmonton 3-0, scoring three times on only 16 shots, while forcing 19 Oiler turnovers.

Another reason I’m on New Jersey straight-up, is the advantage in net. The Oilers are expected to start Stuart Skinner, while the Devils are likely to roll with Jacob Markstrom.

Skinner has been shaky as best since the 4 Nations break. He’s yielded 4+ goals in four of seven starts, and has only one outing with a save percentage north of .889. For the season, he ranks 36th in that category and 34th in goals against average. 2024-25 is shaping up to be the worst season of his career, and he enters play with a GAA of 3.10 on the road.

Markstrom, on the other hand, is sixth in the NHL in GAA. His save percentage has dipped to .906, but he struggled after returning from a month-long lay-off. Prior to his injury, he’d yielded two or fewer goals in 14 of 18 starts.

The 35-year-old looked more like his old self in his most recent start, leading New Jersey to a win versus the Blue Jackets. With the Devils clinging to third spot in the Metropolitan, they’ll need Markstrom at his best to preserve their playoff spot. I’m betting we see another solid performance from him tonight, helping lead New Jersey to the upset win.
