Nick Ball Boxing Analysis

Liverpool’s Nick Ball (21-0-1, 12 KOs) has been on a meteoric rise since turning pro in 2019. The 28-year-old pressure fighter captured the WBA featherweight title in an electric 2024 performance against Raymond Ford, avenging a previous draw with WBC champ Rey Vargas along the way.

In his first title defense last October, Ball dazzled his hometown fans with a dominant 10th-round TKO of the always game Ronny Rios. The stocky 5’2″ Ball overwhelms opponents with relentless aggression, a high punch output, and deceptive power in close.

The champ sets a grueling pace behind a tight guard and excellent head movement. He’ll be giving up height and reach to the 5’6″ Doheny but will look to get on the inside and unleash his trademark hooks to the body and head.

TJ Doheny Boxing Analysis

At 38 years old, Ireland’s TJ Doheny (26-5, 20 KOs) knows opportunities like this are fleeting. The former IBF 122-pound king has had an up-and-down career defined by his willingness to go into hostile territory.

After losing his title to Daniel Roman in 2019, Doheny hit a rough patch, dropping 3 of his next 4 fights. But the seasoned southpaw rebuilt himself with a trio of upset wins in Japan, earning him a September 2024 crack at undisputed champ Naoya Inoue.

Although he was stopped in the 7th round, Doheny showed grit and gave a solid account of himself before Inoue’s bodywork forced him to wilt. The 5’6″ veteran is most comfortable fighting at range behind a sharp right jab. But he’s also capable of getting into the trenches and can bang to the body with authority.

Ball vs Doheny Prediction

Credit to Doheny for jumping right back into the fire after a devastating loss to a pound-for-pound great. But the Irishman is facing a younger, fresher titleholder in Ball who appears to be entering his prime.

Doheny’s southpaw stance and four-inch height advantage might give Ball some early trouble. But the champ’s relentless, pressure-heavy style is built to close the distance, slip inside that reach, and wear him down.

Expect Ball to come out fast, immediately testing Doheny’s stamina—especially after that grueling fight with Inoue. His high pace and punishing body shots will take their toll as the rounds go on.

By the middle rounds, Doheny could be running on fumes while Ball drowns him in volume. The veteran’s grit will keep him standing, but making it to the final bell seems unlikely.

I’m backing “The Wrecking Ball” to retain his title with a late stoppage, sending the Merseyside crowd into a frenzy. But the line is far too wide to confidently lay the wood. Instead, look for value in the winning method or over/under props.
