Two teams enduring different struggles see one trying to get closer to the 2025 Stanley Cup, while the other is buried in the basement of the Metropolitan Division.

The Minnesota Wild (36-23-4) host the Pittsburgh Penguins (24-31-10) at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Online sportsbooks lean to the Wild in the NHL odds, pegging them as decent favorites. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30pm ET, with TNT providing the broadcast coverage. MAX is an options for those who stream the action.

Honestly, this matchup carries the potential to hold a lot of sentimental value. This will be the last time Marc-Andre Fleury faces his former team. Fleury will retire at the end of the season. This is an important game for Minnesota as Colorado has passed them in the standings. Now, the Wild need two points as they try to hold the fort until reinforcements come back.

Minnesota currently sits fourth in the Central Division, two points behind the Colorado Avalanche and a gargantuan 16 back of division-leading Winnipeg. Minnesota still leads in the Wild Card chase, six points up on Calgary and seven on Vancouver. The front office had to sit on their hands, however, due to all the injuries. Bill Guerin’s hope is that Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Jonas Brodin all return before the regular season ends.

This year has again spiraled out of control for Pittsburgh, as they’re now seven game under .500 and 2-7-1 in their past 10 games. However, the Penguins still have Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, and Erik Karlsson. There lies some talent, even if the defense and goaltending is lacking some.

The Penguins just cannot buy a goal lately and when they do the defense and goaltending fail them. The Wild have been a little better, splitting their previous 10 contests. Minnesota is 22nd in goals per game, while the Penguins are 17th.

The Wild are 12th in goals against and the Pens are only better than San Jose. The Wild are lucky they started out so well, as Calgary and Vancouver are starting to get a little too close for comfort.

Minnesota starting “The Flower” makes too much sense, according to the goalie projections. However, Pittsburgh turns to Tristan Jarry to try and stop the defense that has become too much of a sieve for words.

The Penguins vs Wild odds come in with a total of 5.5 goals, with -125 odds toward the over. Minnesota stands as a -155 moneyline favorite, and are now +162 to cover the puck line of 1.5 goals. These two teams are now evenly matched as Minnesota has 76 points on the season compared to Pittsburgh’s 58.

NHL Player Prop odds as of March 9th at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Now, we shift gears to the player props market, where I’m tipping toward the Rickard Rakell anytime goal as my best bet. He has 29 goals in 64 games for Pittsburgh, and that rolls in at +200. For bonus points err dollars, 3+ shots for the winger is straight Even.

Rakell rolls on that top power play unit which increases his chances of a goal, a point, and several shots on goal this Sunday afternoon.

Penguins vs Wild prop: Rickard Rakell Anytime Goal Scorer (+200)
