Two teams with vastly different season outputs square off Thursday Night, with one squad poised to potentially make a run to win the 2025 Stanley Cup, while the other is in a battle to avoid the worst record in the NHL.

The Colorado Avalanche (36-24-2) host the San Jose Sharks (17-37-9) at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. Online sportsbooks are bullish on the Avs in the NHL odds, pegging them as heavy favorites. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:30pm ET, with ESPN providing the broadcast coverage.

Simply put, this is a massive mismatch on paper, which is why Colorado is such huge favorites, particularly considering that they’ve won eleven in a row against their Western Conference foes.

Colorado currently sits fourth in the Central Division, two points behind the Minnesota Wild and a whopping 14 back of division-leading Winnipeg. Colorado has breathing room in the Wild Card chase, seven points up on Calgary and Vancouver. The front office hasn’t sat on their hands, however, dealing away star forward Mikko Rantanen in a blockbuster with Carolina for Martin Necas (13 points in 13 games in Denver), and recently prying Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey from the Rangers.

It’s been another down year for San Jose, as they’re the worst team in the league. However, their prized #1 draft pick Macklin Celebrini hasn’t disappointed, racking up 45 points in 51 contests, and he leads in the Calder Trophy Odds race.

The Avs have been hot, with three straight victories and seven of ten. The Sharks have a modest two-game win streak, but had lost 14 of 15 prior to that. Colorado is eighth in goals per game, while the Sharks are 29th. The Avs are 16th in goals against and their counterparts bring up the rear. Colorado was actually fourth worst prior to dealing for Sharks netminder Mackenzie Blackwood in mid December. Since then, they’re vastly improved to fourth best.

Not only has Colorado won eleven in a row against San Jose, but they’ve also been victorious in all but two of those by at least two markers, so I’m taking the Avs on the puck line for this duel. Six of their last seven triumphs this season has seen Colorado win by two or more goals also.

The Sharks vs Avalanche odds show a total of 6 goals, with -115 odds to the over. Colorado is listed as a -430 moneyline favorite, and are -155 to cover the puck line of 1.5 goals. These two teams haven’t been evenly matched, with the Avs taking the last eleven meetings.

NHL Player Prop odds as of March 6th at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Switching over to the player props market, where I’m making over 1.5 points for Nathan MacKinnon my best bet. He leads the NHL in points with 93, and that’s coupled with the Sharks allowing the most goals per game in the league.

MacKinnon has also feasted on the Sharks of late, racking up at least two points in four straight meetings, and ten of his last 13 contests against his Western Conference foes.

Sharks vs Avalanche prop: Nathan MacKinnon Over 1.5 points (-130)
