  • The Blue Jackets are -115 moneyline favorites over the Red Wings in Saturday’s Stadium Series Game
  • Columbus has won three straight, including a 5-2 victory over Detroit on Thursday

An outdoor game has been on the NHL’s wish list for as long as anyone at the league office can remember. On Saturday, it’s finally happening.

The Columbus Blue Jackets (29-22-8) host the Detroit Red Wings (30-23-6) in front of upwards of 90,000 fans. Online sportsbooks are bullish on the Blue Jackets in the NHL odds, pegging them as short chalk. Puck drop is scheduled for 6pm ET, with ESPN providing the broadcast coverage.

Red Wings vs Blue Jackets Prediction

  • Over 6.5 (+110) at Caesars

Detroit and Columbus are two of the biggest surprises of the NHL season. Both are well on their way to eclipsing their NHL regular season points over/under, with the Blue Jackets just seven points shy with 23 games to play.

No team in the league has overcome as much adversity as Columbus. They’ve been riddled with injuries to key players, and that was after the passing of Johnny Gaudreau in the summer. Up and down the lineup, players have stepped up. Zach Werenski is a Norris Trophy odds contender, leading the league in ice-time. He’s first among defensemen in even strength goals, and second in overall points.

Kirill Marchenko has already set a career-high in points, and leads the team in goals for a second straight season. Speaking of offense, even with their injuries Columbus ranks fifth in scoring. They’re top-10 in expected goals for, and middle of the pack in high danger chances for.

Goaltending and defense is a different story. Elvis Merzlikins and Daniil Tarasov have underwhelmed between the pipes. Both are outside the top-38 in save percentage and goals against average. The Blue Jackets are eighth worst in goals against, and fifth worst in expected goals against.

As for Detroit, the stats are similar. The Red Wings are middle of the pack in goals for, and 20th in goals against. They’re 22nd in expected goals against, while Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon are outside the top-20 in save percentage.

Detroit enters with a 17-6-2 record since replacing Derek Lalonde with Todd McLellan. They boast the second best powerplay in the league, led by Lucas Raymond. The 22-year-old is one of three 20+ goal scorers, and is on pace for career-highs in points and assists.

With plenty of firepower for both sides, and underwhelming defensive stats, I’m betting on this game going over the total. They’ve played twice already this season, with each contest producing 7+ goals.

NHL Player Prop odds as of Feb. 28 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Switching over to the player props market, where I’m making 1+ point for Alex DeBrincat my best bet. The 27-year-old leads the Blue Jackets in goals, and is riding an eight-game point streak.

DeBrincat is averaging over three shots per game this month, and had six on Thursday versus Columbus. He’s second on the team in powerplay points, and should be able to feast on the Blue Jackets weak penalty kill. Only two Eastern Conference clubs have a worse PK% than Columbus.
