Kevin O’Connell was named the 2024-25 NFL Coach of the Year, but (as usual) it was a tight race that saw a few different favorites throughout the 2024-25 NFL season. Below you’ll find the odds to win the 2024 NFL COY award, and can see how back-and-forth this race was most of the season. The graphs below were generated by averaging the odds from multiple sportsbooks.

Simply looking at the candidates to turn around bad or underachieving teams, we saw coaches like Jim Harbaugh (opened as the favorite), who took on a Chargers team who had underachieved throughout Justin Herbert’s career, Raheem Morris, who was entering his first year as Falcons head coach and inherited a very talented roster, Shane Steichen, who nearly made the playoffs the prior season while having to start a backup QB most of the year, and Jonathan Gannon, whose Cardinals were looking to improve on a lousy prior season they played mostly without Kyler Murray, open among the top contenders for COY.

However, Kevin O’Connell made a quick move to become the 2024-25 COY favorite after his Vikings got off to a hot start, beating some of the believed-to-be league’s best teams over the first few weeks of the season. Dan Quinn and Dan Campbell both enjoyed time as the favorite before odds closed, but O’Connell regained status as the favorite before Christmas and never looked back. His Vikings finished the regular season tied for the second-best record in the NFC, and tied for the third-best in the NFL. Despite losing to the Lions, allowing Detroit to take the NFC’s top seed in the playoffs and dropped Minnesota to #5, O’Connell’s squad not only exceeded expectations, but smashed them. Minnesota was expected to win 6-7 games and find themselves near the top of the draft board the following season. Instead, O’Connell made Sam Darnold into one of the league’s better QBs in the 2024-25 season (outside of Week 18 and the playoffs) and won 14 games.

Bettors could have gotten the Vikings head coach at +2750 odds at opening, and those were the longest odds available all 2024-25 season. His odds were never longer than +775 from October on.

Here are some more notes on the movement we have seen:

  • [February 6] Kevin O’Connell was named the 2024-25 NFL Coach of the Year at the NFL Honors.
  • [December 31] After beating the Packers in Week 17, Kevin O’Connell’s Coach of the Year odds improved to -1000.
  • [December 23] O’Connell went from +110 odds to -250 odds after a Week 16 win over the Seahawks, which left the door open for Minnesota to take the NFC’s top seed.
  • [December 17] Kevin O’Connell took back over as the COY favorite after Dan Campbell’s Lions lost to the Bills in Week 15.
  • [December 10] Dan Campbell moved from the COY favorite to an odds-on favorite after beating the Packers in Week 14, which included a decision to go for it on fourth down instead of kicking a game-winning field goal at that time that would have left time on the clock for Jordan Love. It’s the first time we saw an odds-on favorite.
  • [November 26] After the Steelers lost to the Browns in Week 12, Dan Campbell took over as the Coach of the Year favorite, marking the first time this season he has been atop the COY odds.
  • [November 12] Mike Tomlin has taken over as the favorite to win NFL COY after his Steelers beat Dan Quinn’s Commanders in Week 10. Quinn had been the favorite entering that game.
  • [October 29] After Kevin O’Connell’s Vikings dropped their second straight game in Week 8, we saw Dan Quinn take over as the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year. Quinn’s Commanders pulled off a miraculous win over the Bears in Week 8, holding onto their top spot in the division (at this point in time), while the Vikings may be slowing down a bit after their hot start.
  • [October 15] A big win over a division-rival in Week 6 (the Broncos) has resulted in LA Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh’s COY odds improving from +1550 to +700, which were the third-best odds in the league at this time.
  • [October 8] Sean Payton moved into the top three contenders for NFL Coach of the Year following Denver’s third straight victory in Week 5. Payton’s odds improved from +1900 to +1100. Mike Macdonald’s odds tanked after his Seahawks were upset by the Giants at home, moving from +625 to +1500.
  • [October 1] Another Commanders win in Week 4 saw Dan Quinn’s NFL COY odds improve from +1750 to +650, tied for the second-best on the board.
  • [September 24] Kevin O’Connell took over as the new favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year after his Vikings beat the Texans in Week 3, moving their record to 3-0. O’Connell’s odds improved from +850 to +335.
  • [September 17] Matt Eberflus went from the second-best odds to win NFL COY at +950 entering Week 2, to +2500 after Chicago’s offense continued to struggle.
  • [September 10] Kevin O’Connell, Jerod Mayo, and Mike Tomlin all saw their COY odds improve significantly after good Week 1 performances from their respective teams. O’Connell went from +2000 to +1350, Tomlin from +2500 to +1450, and Mayo from +3000 to +1300. Raheem Morris’ Falcons didn’t get off to a very good start, however, and his odds faded from +1250 to +1700. Dave Canales saw an even bigger dip as his odds went from +1700 to +2750 following his Panthers being blown out and Bryce Young looking just as bad as last year.
  • [August 27] Mike Macdonald has seen his Coach of the Year odds improve from +2100 prior to the preseason to +1200 as we wrap up the preseason. Bettors like what they saw from Macdonald’s defense in Seattle throughout the preseason.
  • [August 6] Harbaugh has taken back the title of NFL COY favorite as the preseason kicks off.
  • [July 24] Matt Eberflus, bears head coach, has overtaken Jim Harbaugh as the favorite to win NFL Coach of the Year.
  • [April 29] After the Steelers firmed up a new QB room with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, and now put together a really nice draft class, Mike Tomlin’s NFL COY odds have improved from +2650 to +2150.
  • [March 4] The Chargers’ new head coach, Jim Harbaugh, has opened as the favorite to win the 2024-25 NFL Coach of the Year award. Harbaugh inherits an extremely talented QB in Justin Herbert, but a pretty tough cap situation.
