Two of the NBA’s most prominent franchises meet tonight when the LA Lakers (27-19, 11-13 away) visit the New York Knicks (32-16, 17-8 home). Both teams have been red-hot lately, but an injury to a Lakers star has online sportsbooks very bullish on New York in the latest NBA odds. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:40pm PT / 8:40pm ET at Madison Square Garden, with ABC and ESPN+ providing the broadcast coverage.

LA Lakers vs New York Knicks Predictions

  • New York Knicks -10.5 (-110) at Caesars

New York enters play as the third leading contender in the NBA Championship odds, and with a much cleaner injury report. LA will be without superstar Anthony Davis, who suffered an abdominal strain on Tuesday night. Davis left the first quarter of the Lakers blowout loss to the Sixers, after only 10 minutes.

The team announced he’ll be shut down for a week, which puts the Lakers in a big hole. Davis leads the team in scoring, rebounding and defensive win shares. His replacement, Jaxson Hayes, grades out much worse defensively and is a zero at the offensive end. LA was 2-4 last season without AD, losing by 14 or more in each defeat.

They’re actually 3-1 with him sitting this season, but that’s misleading. Those victories were over Washington, Brooklyn and Portland, three of the eight worst teams in the NBA. They played one opponent in New York’s tier, and were crushed. Memphis blew them out by 17, winning the rebounding battle by 13.

That spells trouble for LeBron James and Co. against the Knicks. New York has won five straight, putting up 122, 143 and 143 points over their last three. They’re fresh off beating two of the West’s elite in the Nuggets and Grizzlies, and rank second in the NBA in Net Rating.

Karl-Anthony Towns is playing like an NBA MVP odds contender, while Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart are filling up the stat sheet. New York has covered in three straight, by an average of 19+ points, and are a different team at MSG. They rank fourth in Net Rating at home, while the Lakers Net Rating is 8 points worse as a visitor than in LA, and that’s with Davis healthy.

AD’s loss is going to be felt the hardest in the matchup with Towns. The 7-footer has been a stat stuffer this season, averaging a career-high 14 rebounds per game to go along with 3.5 assists. Towns cleared 17.5 rebounds and assists five times last month, and in most cases he did it in tougher matchups.

No Laker is going to keep him off the glass tonight, and with LA’s defense yielding a 55% effective field goal percentage, more of his passes are going to be converted into buckets.

Pick: Karl-Anthony Towns Over 17.5 Rebounds + Assists (+100) at Caesars
