The San Jose Sharks (15-32-6) head to the Emerald City to take on the Seattle Kraken (22-27-3) in a Pacific Division showdown on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 PM Eastern Time at Climate Pledge Arena, with national coverage provided by ESPN.

The Sharks enter as appealing +158 underdogs, while the over/under is set at 6 goals. Can San Jose earn their third straight win over Seattle this season? Let’s dive into the matchup and find out.

Here is our Sharks vs Kraken prediction for Thursday night.

Sharks vs Kraken Prediction

I’m rolling with the Sharks to pull off the upset in Seattle. San Jose has won both meetings against the Kraken this season, prevailing 8-5 at home on November 29 and 4-2 in Seattle on November 30. The Sharks are coming off a gritty 2-1 home win over Pittsburgh and will be brimming with confidence.

Although San Jose sits near the bottom of the standings at 15-32-6, their advanced metrics tell a different story. Over the past 10 games, the Sharks have generated more scoring chances than the Kraken (196-165) and high-danger chances (76-66) at 5v5. If San Jose starts burying their opportunities, an upset is on the cards.

While Seattle has earned better results lately with a 5-5-0 record over their last 10, the underlying numbers are concerning. The Kraken rank 26th in Corsi For % (43.76%), 27th in Shots For % (45.92%), and 29th in Expected Goals For % (42.44%) over that span. This indicates Seattle has been winning in spite of their poor play.

Another major advantage for San Jose is in net, with the confirmation that Yaroslav Askarov will start. The 22-year-old phenom is 4-5-2 with a solid 2.87 GAA and .905 save percentage. He’s coming off an impressive 29-save effort in the Sharks’ win over Pittsburgh.

Seattle’s goaltending situation is murkier after waiving Philipp Grubauer. Expected starter Joey Daccord has allowed 3+ goals in 2 of his last 4 starts. If the Kraken struggle to keep the puck out of their net as they have all season (3.19 GA/GP), it could be a long night.

Look for the Sharks to control the run of play and generate plenty of grade-A scoring chances against a vulnerable Kraken defense. The over 6 goals is also worth a lean in a battle between two bottom-5 defensive teams.

Sharks vs Kraken Odds

Team Spread Moneyline Total
SJ Sharks +1.5 (-150) +158 Over 6.0 (-110)
SEA Kraken -1.5 (+125) -192 Under 6.0 (-110)

The Sharks are currently priced as +158 underdogs on the moneyline. This means a $100 bet on San Jose would return a profit of $158 if they pull off the upset. The Kraken are heavy -192 home favorites, requiring a $192 wager to net $100.

San Jose is getting +1.5 goals on the puck line at -150 odds, while Seattle is laying -1.5 goals at +125. The Sharks puck line bet would cash if they win outright or lose by a single goal. The Kraken need to win by 2+ goals to cover the puck line.

The total for this contest is hovering at 6 goals, with the over and under both at standard -110 juice. This number indicates bookmakers are expecting a higher-scoring affair than the average NHL game.

The total has gone OVER in 4 of San Jose’s last 5 games.
San Jose are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games against Seattle.
Seattle are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games when playing at home against San Jose.
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Seattle’s last 6 games against San Jose.
The total has gone OVER in 8 of Seattle’s last 10 games against Pacific Division opponents.

The betting trends point toward the Sharks having Seattle’s number recently, with San Jose winning 4 of the last 5 head-to-head meetings. The Sharks also recently snapped a 6-game losing streak overall, so they are motivated to keep the wins coming.

When these teams collide, the lamp tends to get lit early and often. The over has cashed in 4 of the last 5 Sharks games and 4 of the past 6 meetings in this rivalary. With Seattle allowing 3.20 goals against at home and the over hitting in 8 of the Kraken’s last 10 divisional games, I believe we’ll see plenty of offense.

Ride the underdog Sharks to take a bite out of Seattle on the road, while also sprinkling the over 6 goals in what should be a fast-paced, back-and-forth affair.
