Denver Nuggets vs New York Knicks Predictions

  • New York Knicks -3 (-105) at Caesars

New York enters play as the third leading contender in the NBA Championship odds. Denver, the 2023 champs, sit fifth. Both teams are in excellent health, with Knicks forward Josh Hart being the only starter on either side with an injury designation.

Hart is listed as questionable with a knee injury for the second straight game. He played through it on Monday, and put up 10 boards, five assists and a steal in a rout of Memphis. That performance followed a triple-double outing on Saturday against Sacramento, when he posted a 20-18-11 line.

Hart was snubbed from All-Star starter consideration, but he’s got a strong case to be selected as a reserve. He’s averaging a career-high 14.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game, and is a menace at the defensive end. The 29-year-old ranks first in loose balls recovered, and top-12 in deflections and steals. He plays more minutes than all but two players in the league, and has the fourth most triple-doubles.

While Hart was snubbed, both Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns were named All-Star Game starters. The trio’s play has made the Knicks a serious threat to win the NBA title, and a nightmare to play against. New York is second in offensive rating this season, and fifth in Net Rating. They’re one of the best teams in the NBA at home, while Denver is below league average in Net Rating on the road.

The Nuggets are fresh off back-to-back road losses to Minnesota and Chicago. Nikola Jokic is once again a top-two favorite in the NBA MVP odds, but Denver has struggled defensively. Jokic and Co. rank bottom-eight this season in defensive rating. They’ve surrendered 121+ points in three straight outings, and coughed up 145 points to the Knicks in their first meeting.

Denver allowed New York to shoot 61% from the field and 53% from three. Obviously, those numbers are outliers, but let’s not forget the Knicks have the second best effective field goal percentage in the league.

New York also takes care of the basketball, with the fifth best assist-to-turnover ratio. They produced 22 more assists in their first game versus the Nuggets, led by 17 from Brunson. The Knicks dominated the glass as well, earning 10 more boards. Only three teams allow more rebounds to the opposition than Denver, while the Nuggets permit the sixth most threes.

NBA player props from DraftKings Sportsbook on January 29.

Speaking of threes, Michael Porter has the highest prop in that category with the shortest odds to go over at 2.5 (-105). Jokic has the biggest points and assists prop at 27.5, and 10.5 respectively, while he and Towns have the largest rebounds prop at 12.5.

We’re targeting Towns in this matchup, but not in the rebounding category. We’ll take over 1.5 threes for KAT, a number he’s cleared in five of 10 outings. Towns is a huge mismatch for the entire Nuggets team away from the basket, and can wear out Jokic away from the perimeter. Denver is yielding a 43% mark to enemy three-point shooters over the last three games, and a league-worst 128.8 points per game.

Pick: Karl-Anthony Towns Over 1.5 Threes (-125) at Caesars
