Seeking their first three-game win streak of the season on Monday afternoon, the Charlotte Hornets (10-28, 6-13 home) host the Dallas Mavericks (23-19, 10-11 away), a team that just snapped a three-game losing skid. Still without the services of Luka Doncic, the return of Kyrie Irving among a list of walking wounded for the Mavericks still has them as the betting favorites. Mavericks/Hornets tips off at noon ET on Martin Luther King Day from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, with NBA TV providing the broadcast coverage.
Mavericks vs Hornets Odds
Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Dallas Mavericks | -5.5 (-105) | -223 | Over 224.5 (-105) |
Charlotte Hornets | +5.5 (-115) | +180 | Under 224.5 (-115) |
Dallas is pegged as a 5.5-point road favorite in the NBA odds, with the Hornets a +180 underdogs on the moneyline. The game total is at 224.5.

While Doncic (calf) will be out until February, Dallas will also be without the services of Dwight Powell (hip), Jaden Hardy (ankle), and Dante Exum (wrist). Dereck Lively (ankle) is listed as questionable.
For the Hornets, it was just recently announced that wing Brandon Miller’s wrist injury is considered severe, and he will be out indefinitely. He initially suffered the injury in a January 15 game against the Utah Jazz.

No surprise that LaMelo Ball, who ranks fourth in the NBA in scoring at 29.5 points per game, has the highest scoring prop for all players Monday at that same figure — though he has scored 30 or more points just once in his last five starts. Kyrie Irving has Dallas’ highest scoring prop at 24.5 points.
Charlotte big man Mark Williams is the only player listed at double-digit rebounds, at 12.5 boards, while Lively ranks highest for Dallas at 7.5. On top of scoring, Ball leads all players with the highest assist (8.5) and 3-point make (4.5) totals.
Mavericks vs Hornets Predictions
The Hornets eked out a close 125-123 win in Chicago last time out, a game after going into Utah and dumping the Jazz 117-112.
That’s a scoring surge for them, considering they rank 26th in the NBA in scoring, putting up just 107.8 points per game. It’s unfortunate, because the Hornets’ defense isn’t that bad, running 14th, allowing 112.7 points per game.
Even with Charlotte’s recent mild success, they are still tied for the second-fewest wins in the East, and at 6-13, are tied for the second-fewest home wins in the conference.

Dallas is just trying to stay afloat in the wild West, as they have just four wins over the last 12 without Doncic. Irving’s return from a back injury was much welcomed — as was NBA leading scorer sitting out with a wrist injury — as the Mavericks beat OKC 106-98 last time out.
Offensive output is a problem for Dallas too. Minus Luka (and mostly without Kyrie), Dallas is averaging a lowly 108.5 points per game over its last dozen, a far cry from a team that puts up better than 115 points and ranks 12th. Over their last eight losses, the Mavericks have failed to cross 110 points five times.
Dallas has win the last two head-to-head meetings, but Charlotte has actually been the better bet, going 4-0-1 against the spread against the Mavericks over the last five. Irving’s return and the win over the Thunder makes it look like the Mavericks have turned the corner, but bettors should be wary: Dallas is 2-9-0 ATS over its last 11.
For now, I’ll ride with the hotter hand and those points.
Mavericks vs Hornets Picks:
- Hornets +5.5 (-105)
- Ball Under 4.5 3-point makes (-140)
