The Golden State Warriors (2-0, 0-0 home, 2-0 ATS) play their home-opener on Sunday night against the LA Clippers (1-1, 1-0 away, 2-0 ATS) at the Chase Center and 5:40 pm PT/8:40 pm ET. With Kawhi Leonard still out for LAC, Golden State is almost a double-digit favorite in Sunday’s NBA odds.

On paper, the Clippers roster looks severely depleted from years past. Paul George is now in Philadelphia and Kawhi Leonard is in street clothes, leaving 35-year-old James Harden and 31-year-old Norman Powell as the go-to scorers on offense.

The early returns have been positive, though. LAC took Kevin Durant and the Suns to OT in their first game, falling 116-113 in a game they led by as many as ten in the fourth quarter. Last night, they scored a 109-104 over Denver as 7.5-point road underdogs.

One of the main reasons the Clippers/Warriors spread is so big is travel. Not only are the Clippers playing the second end of a back-to-back, they played at altitude in Denver last night, which is more fatiguing than a game at sea level.

But it’s also very early in the season and everyone’s legs will have a little more jump than if this game were in March.

The Warriors have been excellent in their first two games of the season, demolishing Portland (140-104) and Utah (127-86) with newcomer Buddy Hield leading the team in scoring both nights (22, 27) despite playing just 35 total minutes off the bench. The Blazers and Jazz project to be at or near the bottom of the West all season, and those games are not a good measuring stick of how Golden State will do in its first season since 2011 without Klay Thompson.

While the practicalities of the LAC road trip are not lost on me, this spread is still too big for me to back the Warriors. But I will ride Hield’s hot hand with a plus-money ladder play at over 14.5 (+195). It’s clear that Hield came here to shoot. He’s launched 26 FGA attempts in 35 minutes through Golden State’s first two games. His 75% three-point percentage won’t last long, but even if he stays moderately hot on Sunday, he should hit 15 points.

Steph Curry has the highest point total on the board at 24.5, followed closely by James Harden at 23.5. Harden is averaging 26.0 PPG through two games.

Harden also has the highest assist total on the board by a wide margin. After dishing out 16 assists in Denver last night, Harden’s assist total on Sunday has been set at 9.5.  He averaged 8.5 APG in his first season with the Clippers last year.

Warriors -9.0 (-112) at DraftKings -400 at BetMGM Under 222.5 (-110) at bet365

The Clippers vs Warriors spread is listed at 9.5 at most books but DraftKings has actually lowered the number to 9.0 as of Sunday morning.
