Jaguars’ Offense Could Light Up Trojans’ Defense

Don’t let South Alabama’s 18-16 loss to Arkansas State last time out let you think their offense is struggling.

That’s two straight games the Jags have been held under 16 points (they dropped a 42-10 decision to 14th-ranked LSU the week prior), but the Arkansas State L was a total anomaly.

They still churned out 453 yards of offense, including 292 through the air and a healthy 4.9 yards per tote on the ground, but a pair of turnovers stalled out what should have been scoring drives, and they never could get rolling.

Still, their 36.5 points per game ranks 22nd in the nation, powered by pivot Gio Lopez, who has thrown for 1,308 yards on a crisp 63.3% completion rate, with 12 TD scores against just one interception.

Troy’s defense might not be ready to handle the Sun Belt’s Top-3 scoring offense. Last time out, they were crushed 38-17 by Texas State, the third time this season the defense has surrendered at least 38 points.

On the year, the Trojans are seventh in the Sun Belt in points allowed, bleeding 27.8 per contest.

There’s not enough on offense to outscore those problems, either. Troy is putting up just 20.7 points per game, and have topped 21 points just once all season.

There’s also the issue at quarterback, where Goose Crowder (head) may not be ready, with Tucker Kilcrease potentially in line for a second straight start.

Troy vs South Alabama Prediction

You have to go back to 2017 to find the last South Alabama win, as Troy has racked up six straight W’s while going a perfect 6-0 against the spread — with five of those games as the betting favorite.

These are not the Trojans of those years past, though. Troy is 0-2 on the road this season, blasted by Memphis 38-17, and Iowa 38-21. They’ve yet to count a win against an FBS team this season, and are 0-3 as a betting underdog on the year.

Troy vs South Alabama – Last 5 Matchups

Date Result
Nov. 2, 2023 TROY 28-10
Oct. 20, 2022 TROY 10-6
Nov. 6, 2021 TROY 31-24
Dec. 5, 2020 TROY 29-0
Oct. 16, 2019 TROY 37-13

South Alabama is just 1-3 ATS as betting favorites on the season, but if their offense continues to operate like it has all season, this one should be an easy cover and streak buster.

  • Pick: South Alabama -13.5 (-110)
