As you can see, the Orioles are pretty heavy favorites to win Game 1 of their 2-game tilt with the Nats. The Orioles are -1.5 runline favorites (+115 odds) and -180 moneyline favorites.

The Nationals are fighting uphill here. They’re already the weaker of the 2 teams and playing on the road, where they have really struggled this season. The Nats sit at +150 to win straight up and -140 to keep the game within a run.

The Over/Under for this matchup sits at 9 on Fanatics, both odds at -110. The total is heavily influenced by the pitching matchup so take this with a grain of salt, but the Nats and Orioles are 1-1 against that spread in their regular season series thus far.

Orioles vs. Nationals Pitching Matchup

Jake Irvin vs. Trevor Rogers

Irvin
VS
Rogers
8-10 Record 2-10
3.76 ERA 4.71
119 K 90
1.12 WHIP 1.56
139.0 IP 114.2

Tonight’s pitching matchup isn’t exactly a marquee event, but it should make for some exciting baseball. The Orioles are debuting Trevor Rogers to Camden Yards while the Nationals are set to throw Jake Irvin, who has superior numbers but has struggled in August thus far.

Let’s start with Rogers, who the Orioles acquired from Miami at the end of July. The 26-year old lefty struggled heavily in Miami, losing his first 6 games of the year. He earned a win with a solid performance against Milwaukee to end July, but he’s already earned a loss with the Orioles too.

Rogers is going to allow runs to the Nationals tonight. Only once this year has he not allowed at least one earned run, and usually it’s more than that. He doesn’t throw a lot of strikeouts and forced a ton of fly balls. He usually runs around 4-5 innings per outing.

Irvin is one of the National’s top arms, but that doesn’t mean he comes without his issues as of late. Irvin has recorded just 1 win in the last month with 4 losses across that span. His ERA was hovering under 3 in early July but now sits at 3.76 and he’s allowed an average of over 4 earned runs per outing across his last 6 appearances.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals Prediction

  • BAL vs. WAS pick: Orioles -1.5 (+115)

These Orioles are the far superior batting team and get the best homefield advantage in all of sports – they get to bat last. Having the home crowd at your back is obviously a nice perk, too.

Irvin and Rogers both have their share of problems, and Irvin has been at his worst in recent weeks. Tonight will be Rogers’ Baltimore home debut, which in my opinion will give him a boost against a weak batting team in Washington. I’d expect the Orioles to get after Irvin fairly quick too.

This one shouldn’t be close, but baseball is baseball.
