US Open Favorites Ahead of the 2023 Tournament

The main favorites heading into the 2023 US Open golf tournament at Los Angeles Country Club includes four of the OWGR’s top-five ranked golfers, plus a surging Brooks Koepka, who started the 2023 PGA season with a solid run of play. The top-five favorites a couple weeks out from the tournament were:

Scottie Scheffler (+817)

World #1 Scottie Scheffler leads the 2023 US Open golf odds by the slimmest of margins over world #2 Jon Rahm. Scheffler has two wins on tour this season (WM Phoenix Open and THE PLAYERS) and recently finished tied for second at the PGA Championship. He has played five previous US Opens. The first three were lackluster – two missed cuts and a T27 – but the last two were exceptional. After a 7th-place finish in 2021, Scheffler finished second to Matt Fitzpatrick at the 2022 edition. Still just 26 years of age, Scheffler’s 2022 victory at the Masters was his first and only major championship to date.

Jon Rahm (+833)

Neck-and-neck with Scheffler at both the top of the US Open odds and the top of the OWGR is Spaniard Jon Rahm. Rahm already has four victories on tour in the 2022-23 season, including The Masters. He also won the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express, and The Genesis Invitational. Like Scheffler, Rahm’s early results at the US Open were disappointing (T59, cut, cut in his first three appearances from 2016 to 2018), but he’s put in sensational performances since. He finished T3 in 2019, T23 in 2020, and then won it all in 2021. Last year, he narrowly missed out on another top-ten finish at the US Open with a T12.

Rory McIlroy (+1017)

The next rung of favorites starts with one of the most-accomplished active golfers, Rory McIlroy. The 34-year-old is currently third in the OWGR. McIlroy started the 2023 season strongly with wins at the CJ Cup and the Dubai Desert Classic, while also posting a T2 at the Arnold Palmer in March and then a T7 at the PGA Championship in May. But his other results have been far from encouraging. He missed the cut at both THE PLAYERS and The Masters and was only T47 at the Wells Fargo.

His US Open history is up and down. He’s played the tournament 14 times, winning once (2011) but missing the cut on five occasions. Recently, he’s been very solid, and has actually finished top ten at the US Open in four straight years. His best finish in that span was a T5 last season.
