Spain Coasts Past Switzerland Into Quarterfinals
Spain ran through Costa Rica 3-0 and Zambia 5-0 before hitting a wall against Japan and losing 4-0 despite having 78% of the possession.
That set up a meeting with Switzerland in the round of 16 that saw them get back to winning ways and get there quickly. Spain scored early in the 5’ minute, but then suffered an embarrassing own goal minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
It didn’t matter as they added three more before half to lead 4-1 at the midway mark and added another in the second half to win 5-1.
Four different players scored and Aitana Bonmati scored a brace.
Spain dominated the game stats with 70% possession, 26 shots and 10 shots on target, while Switzerland had only two shots and one shot on target. The corners were 11-0 for Spain.
Spain vs Netherlands Head-to-Head Stats
6th | FIFA Ranking | 9th |
3-0-1 | Record | 3-1-0 |

103 / 36 | Shots / On Target | 73 / 29 |

Spain are the second-highest scorers in the tournament with 13 goals. They lead the xG rankings at +13 and xG differential at +11.5.
Spanish players dominate the passing stats. One player or another from Spain leads in key passes, pass completions, passes into the final third, passes into the penalty area, progressive passes and crosses into the pentalty area.
Gonzalez also leads in shot total per/90 and non penalty xG/90.
But Netherlands’ Jill Roord leads in non-pen xG
Both teams have an impressive goal rate. Spain has scored 13 goals on their 37 shots on target for 50.70%
Netherlands are actually better though in scoring 11 on their 29 shots on target for 53.70%

Netherlands Upset USA But Lose van de Donk
The Dutch edged past Portugal 1-0 in their first game, drew USA 1-1 and routed Vietnam 7-0 in the Group Stage.
In the Round of 16 they met South Africa and scored early and late in the 9’ and 68’ to secure a 2-0 win.
Any clean sheet is good in the World Cup, but even in beating South Africa, Banyana Banyana had more shots on target (7-6), despite only having 30% of the ball. And they were right there in overall shots, with Netherlands only leading 14-13.
The corners were also tight at 6-5 for Netherlands.
The xG in that game was 1.6 to 1.2 for Netherlands. So the numbers say South Africa should have scored.
Danielle van de Donk picked up a yellow in this game which sees her suspended for the quarterfinals as well for the Dutch.
Spain vs Netherlands Scoring Props
Spaniards Esther Gonzalez +160 and Jenni Hermoso +175 are the top favorites to score in this game and the top nine players in the odds all come from Spain, including Bonmati who had two goals last game, at +375 odds.
Each of Bonmati, Hermoso and Alba Redondo lead Spain with three goals each.
The first Dutch players to be listed are Lieke Martens (+375), Lineth Beerensteyn (+375), Roord (+400), Katja Snoeijs (+400) and Renate Jansen (+400).
Roord is the Dutch’s leading scorer this tournament with four goals, followed by Esmee Brugts with two.

Netherlands Projected Lineup: van Domselaar; Janssen, van der Gragt, Spitse; Groenen; Egurrola, Roord, Brugts, Pelova; Martens, Beerensteyn

Spain vs Netherlands Prediction
When it comes to Spain vs Netherlands history, Spain has won the past three recent previous meetings. Those results were a 1-0 win in a 2021 friendly, a 2-0 win in the 2019 Algarve Cup and a 2-0 win in a 2018 friendly. The Dutch wins versus Spain came back in 2008.
The form guide shows each of these teams being in fantastic form. Spain have won 9/10, have only two losses in 18 and only four losses in 45.
Meanwhile, Netherlands is 5-1-0 in their past six and have only four losses in 20 and seven in 37.
During this tournament, Spain has held 81%, 76%, 78% and 70% possession numbers. Netherlands have held 57%, 57%, 72% and 70%.
So Spain perhaps wasn’t going to hold as much possession in this game as they typically do. But, the Dutch are missing crucial midfielder van de Donk, who’s their box-to-box midfielder and who pulls the strings in mid. She’s played and started in every single World Cup game that Netherlands has ever been in. She had lead the tournament in blocks as well.
Netherlands drew the USA but had just one shot on target and they probably should have conceded against South Africa. The Dutch are certainly capable of scoring but of their 11 goals seven came versus Vietnam and I don’t think they have the horses to match Spain here.
Spain will capitalize better on their chances and will win this game. At just -110 in the Spain vs Netherlands odds, they’re a good bet in the Women’s World Cup predictions.
