Double Duty on Saturday
Both Kvitova and Vekic had to win two matches on Saturday, after all the quarterfinal matches were cancelled by rain on Friday.

And both were efficient; Kvitova posted an impressive 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over No. 3 seed Caroline Garcia. Then she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova, a champion last week in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, 6-3, 6-4 even though Alexandrova had the benefit of not having to play her quarterfinal after the withdrawal of Veronika Kudermetova.
Vekic dispatched lucky loser Elina Avanesyan of Russia. Then she got through a tough one against No. 6 seed Maria Sakkari, her good friend, to get to her second final of the 2023 season.
It was her sixth win in nine meetings against Sakkari, who has been the higher-ranked of the two for most of those encounters.

A Renaissance Season For Kvitova
It almost seemed at the start of 2023 that Kvitova, about to turn 33, was sort of winding it down. She was neither great nor terrible, usually somewhere in between.
Then she made the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. And then she won the Miami Open. But then she played just two matches during the clay-court season, losing her opener in Madrid in straight sets to No. 67 Jule Niemeier, and her opener at the French Open to No. 44 Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
So it was hard to gauge how she’d take on this grass-court season.
As it turns out, awfully well.

Vekic’s big serve and forehand are fearsome weapons on grass, where she has her best statistical success even if, in eight trips to Wimbledon, she has reached the second week only once.
She has Pam Shriver, three times a semifinalist at Wimbledon during a tough era, in her corner as a coaching consultant. Which can only help on grass.
Kvitova vs Vekic Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2023 | Miami (R32) | Outdoor Hard | 6-4, 7-6 (3) | Kvitova |
2022 | Eastbourne (R32) | Grass | 6-1, 7-6 (1) | Kvitova |

2014 | Miami (R32) | Outdoor Hard | 6-3, 6-4 | Kvitova |
The only real question for the 33-year-old Kvitova is how well the two-time Wimbledon champion will bounce back from having two singles matches – including one against world No. 4 Garcia – in one day on Saturday.
Her backhand matches up well against Vekic’s big forehand. And her lefty serve and big forehand are a deadly combination against Vekic’s relatively weaker backhand.

Kvitova vs Vekic Prediction
Whether fate or coincidence, the last two times Kvitova and Vekic played each other – in Miami this spring and at Eastbourne on grass a year ago – Kvitova won the tournament.
Those were her two most recent tournament titles, as well.
And the fact that she’s beaten Vekic all three times they’ve played in Miami, where Kvitova never found the conditions to her liking until her surprise triumph this year, is another indicator that things may well go her way.
Can the veteran Czech make it a trifecta? She’s done a good job grabbing the big trophy when she’s put herself in that position in recent years. Perhaps because she knows she’s closer to the end than the beginning, and those are opportunities not to be wasted.
