Bublik Once Again Rules on Grass
Bublik, a Russian who plays for Kazakhstan, is capable of the best and the worst – often within the very same match.
He’s a quirky, unpredictable opponent who often looks as though he’s not taking it all that seriously. Which also makes him a dangerous opponent.

He has had by far his best career results on the grass, which can reward his risk-taking and brings his big serve to the fore.
Bublik was a finalist at Newport in 2019, a grass event held in Rhode Island right after Wimbledon. He made the final there again last year, losing to serve-volley specialist Maxime Cressy.
Big Win over Zverev in Semis
Bublik looked nothing like his usual nonchalant self as he met Alexander Zverev at the net after their semifinal Saturday.
He almost looked … shocked even though the win brings his head-to-head against Zverev to 3-1.

Bublik also got a win over top-10 player Jannik Sinner, who retired down 5-7, 0-2 in their quarterfinal with a left leg issue.

Bublik was 8-19 on the season coming into Halle, so this run to the final is a great confidence builder heading into Wimbledon.
With this run, and the withdrawal of Karen Khachanov (and there might be a couple more), he’s sure to be seeded at the All-England Club when the tournament begins in 10 days.
Rublev Surprisingly Good on Grass
If Rublev is known primarily as a hard-court player, his career results betray that theory. In fact, his winning percentages on clay, hard and grass are almost identical; all are a hair over 60 per cent.
Interestingly, Rublev has never faced a top-20 player on grass; the highest-ranked opponent of his career was Albert Ramos, ranked No. 22 when the Russian beat him in 2017. He defeated No. 23 Roberto Bautista Agut in the Halle semifinals on Saturday.
It was pretty routine, as well: 6-3, 6-4.
That streak will continue in Sunday’s final against Bublik, who is currently ranked No. 48.
Rublev vs Bublik Match History
Year | Tournament | Surface | Score | Winner |
---|---|---|---|---|
2020 | Rotterdam (R16) | Indoor Hard | 7-5, 6-3 | Rublev |
2019 | Vienna (R32) | Indoor Hard | 6-1, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6) | Rublev |
2019 | Moscow (R32) | Indoor Hard | 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 | Rublev |
Bublik won a match between the two in the qualifying at the Moscow tournament, back in 2016 when both were still teenagers. But at the top level, Rublev has won all three encounters.
They’ve all been very close, though. None came on grass; all of the matches were played on quick indoor surfaces. But those are probably the closest conditions to grass, for comparison’s sake.
Rublev vs Bublik Prediction
You would think Bublik’s talent, big serve and unpredictability would mean he has a decent record against top-10 players. He’s a little like Nick Kyrgios, but without much of the drama, in that sense.

But that’s not really the case. Bublik is 7-19 against them; two of those wins came in Davis Cup, a third when Jannik Sinner retired in their quarterfinal this week, and two more came against Zverev.
He’s been in enough finals (including two on grass) that he’s unlikely to have nerves affect him too much.
You’d expect Rublev to win, but we predict Bublik can extract a set.
