It’s Hamburger vs Stuttgart in the second leg of the Bundesliga promotion/relegation playoff on Monday, June 5, with kick-off in the Volksparkstadion at 2:45pm ET.
The first leg in Stuttgart ended 3-0 to the hosts, so Hamburger have a massive job on their hands if they are to turn this one around and win that prized place in the Bundesliga.
We preview our Hamburger vs Stuttgart picks, look at the odds, and offer some analysis, team news, and predictions below.

Hamburger vs Stuttgart Preview
Only the top two teams in 2.Bundesliga get promoted to the Bundesliga automatically, and so it was heart-breaking for Hamburger to miss out on the final day of the season and finish third by just a single point.
It was doubly disappointing because they finished the campaign with a better goal difference than second-placed Darmstadt, and only a point behind them and league winners, Heideheim. To make it even more painful, Heidenheim secured the title (and promotion) thanks to two injury-time goals.

Huge Challenge for Hamburger
It was, therefore, no big surprise, given all of the above, that Hamburger coach Tim Walter found it hard to lift his players for the first leg, which will no doubt have contributed to their disappointing 3-0 defeat.
Their cause was certainly not helped by conceding a goal in the very first minute of the first leg – Konstantinos Mavropanos grabbing that goal before Hamburger had had a chance to get organized defensively. From there it was an uphill struggle and they went on to concede two more in the opening nine minutes of the second half.
Big Chances Missed for Stuttgart
Stuttgart start the second leg in a very healthy position but head coach Sebastian Hoeness will know his team had more than enough opportunities to have put the tie beyond Hamburger’s reach, including the fact they played against opponents who, for the last 20-plus minutes, had just ten men.
In addition to Hamburger’s Anssi Suhonen seeing red on 69 minutes, Serhou Guirassy missed a first-half penalty for Stuttgart, and numerous other chances were missed. As a result, Hamburger still has a glimmer of hope.

Hoeness a Stuttgart Game Changer
It has been a very difficult season for Stuttgart but ended on a positive note and with a good run of form following the arrival of Sebastien Hoeness as head coach. In his 11 games in charge, they lost just twice.
This tie is clearly Stuttgart’s to lose, but they will be wary of conceding an early goal and allowing the Volksparkstadion crowd to get motivated and involved in the game. For Hamburger to take this close, this has to happen.

Hamburger vs Stuttgart Prediction
This tie hinges largely on who scores the first goal. If it’s scored by the visitors it’s almost game over but if it goes Hamburger’s way and before halftime, then it’s game on.
On the basis of the hosts getting that goal, it’s quite conceivable they could go on and win the game but not by a margin big enough for them to claim that Bundesliga place. So, for me, there is value in the +185 for the home win.
Stuttgart vs Hamburger Picks: Hamburger to win (+185) / Under 2.5 goals (+120)
