The PGA Tour’s best convene for one of the top events of the year at the Memorial Tournament. This has been a staple venue on the calendar since 1976, with Jack Nicklaus hosting the championship. This season it’s been given designated event status, so the winner takes home $3.6 million, as opposed to Billy Horschel making $2.16M in 2022.
The top-five golfers on the planet are all competing, with Jon Rahm winning this prestigious tournament once and Patrick Cantlay taking it twice. Scottie Scheffler, who comes in with three straight top-5’s, is the betting favorite.

Patrick Cantlay Thrives At This Tournament
Every time Patrick Cantlay steps foot on these grounds, he’s a threat to win the tournament. He’s done so twice in the past, having lifted trophies in the 2019 and 2021 iterations of the Memorial. In 2018, he was fourth (a shot out of a playoff), and Cantlay wound up tied for third last year. Suffice to say, his ‘strokes gained’ stats around this track are phenomenal.
Patrick Cantlay’s Strokes Gained Stats Last 24 Rounds at Memorial
Total | Tee-To-Green | Ball Striking | Approach | Off-The-Tee | Short Game | Putting |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 8 | 20 |
In Cantlay’s last twelve overall rounds, he ranks second in SG: off-the-tee, fourth in total strokes gained, fifth in ball striking and seventh in putting. He enters this week coming off a T-9th at the PGA Championship, his ninth straight result of T-21st or better. Getting him at +1000 odds, which is longer than the top-two on the board, is a bonus.

2023 Memorial Tournament Picks and Value Bets
- Justin Thomas (+2500): Though Justin Thomas hasn’t had the year he’d have envisioned, these odds are very enticing. Had he been in form, they’d have been slashed to perhaps lower than +1000. It’s not as if his game has fallen off a cliff either, as he has eight top-25’s in his last eleven starts. JT has had success at this track in the past, dropping a playoff at this venue in 2020 (Workday Open), along with a pair of top-10’s at the Memorial.
- Hideki Matsuyama (+3500): Hideki Matsuyama has won here in 2014, and he’s posted two other top-6’s. He also comes in with some decent form, racking up top-30’s in his last five stroke play tournaments. He ranks fifth in SG: tee-to-green in the last three events.
- Adam Scott (+5500): Adam Scott has quietly put together some strong performances, with back-to-back top 10’s, followed by a top-30 at the PGA Championship. In his last twelve rounds, he ranks third in putting and seventh in total strokes gained. Scott has been a runner-up here in the past (2019), which was one of his four top-5’s at Muirfield Village. He’ll be an interesting name in the top 10/20 markets.
