Having dominated the offseason, expectations were sky high for the Mets (25-25, 13-16 road) in 2023, but the Queens side started slowly and sported a record below .500 as recently as a week ago. One more loss to the Cubs (22-26, 13-11 home) when they meet on Thursday, May 25th, and the Mets will once again find themselves with more defeats than wins.
First pitch for the series finale between these two squads is scheduled for 7:40 pm ET under the lights at Wrigley Field. Dating back to July of last season, the Cubbies have now won six straight against the Mets. You can watch this one on SNY and the Marquee Sports Network.

Mets vs Cubs Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
New York Mets | +100 | OFF | OFF |
Chicago Cubs | -120 | OFF | OFF |
Having taken each of the first two matchups in this three game set, oddsmakers are leaning towards the sweep with the Cubs slim -120 favorites as opposed to +100 odds for New York. At those odds, Chicago has an implied win probability of 54.55% as opposed to a 50% probability of victory for the Mets.
It’s expected to be a chilly 53 degrees at game time with the Windy City living up to it’s billing as the wind will be blowing at 16 miles per hour during this affair.

New York Mets vs Chicago Cubs Probable Pitchers
At the age of 36 and in the last season of a 5-year contract, Carlos Carrasco looks like he’s close to the end of the line unless he drastically turns things around.
Carlos Carrasco's return from the injured list is not going well. Three of the first four batters have reached base, including Josh Naylor, who hit a three-run homer.
The Mets have not scored first for 13 consecutive games.

After missing a month due to elbow inflammation, the veteran righty returned to the mound last week, but allowed five earned runs in just five innings of work. He’s made four starts this campaign and given up at least five runs in three of those outings.
Owner of an unsightly 8.68 ERA, if Carrasco’s struggles continue, the Mets will have no choice but to consider replacing him in the rotation. The positives he can take from his last start are a four-seam fastball that averaged 92.1 miles per hour, up from his season average of 91.3 and an effective change-up that generated five whiffs on 11 attempts, inducing mostly soft contact.
Carrasco vs Hendricks Stats

8.68 | ERA | N/A |

Manager David Ross announced after the Cubs 4-2 victory on Wednesday that instead of giving the ball to the struggling Jameson Taillon, he was prepared to give Kyle Hendricks his first start of the season instead. Taillon will go Saturday to break up lefties Justin Steele and Drew Smyly in the rotation.
Hendricks hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since July 5th of last year. He suffered a capsular tear in his right shoulder last season, but has made five rehab appearances with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, posting a 2-1 record and a 5.75 ERA in those outings.
After struggling in his first two starts in Iowa, Hendricks has shown encouraging signs, giving up three earned runs in 16 innings since, with 14 strikeouts and two walks while scattering 13 hits.
Mets Struggle Against Cubs in MLB Odds
For some reason, the Cubbies seem to have the Queens’ teams number. New York is 9-24 in their last 33 meetings against Chicago, a brutal .273 winning percentage. Although the Mets were top five favorites in the World Series odds to start the season, the Cubs are still owning them.

05/24/2023 | Mets | Cubs | CHC, 4-2 |
05/23/2023 | Mets | Cubs | CHC, 7-2 |
09/14/2022 | Cubs | Mets | CHC, 6-3 |

09/12/2022 | Cubs | Mets | CHC, 5-2 |
07/17/2022 | Mets | Cubs | CHC, 3-2 |
As you can see in the table above, the Cubs have won taken six consecutive contests against the Mets, holding them to just 12 runs combined in those meetings.
There’s no bigger bat in any MLB starting lineups than the one that Pete Alonso is carrying for the Mets, but it’s obvious he needs some help. The first baseman leads all of baseball with 17 homers, but New York hasn’t scored more than two runs in three straight games.
The Mets lose yet another series to a bad team.
They’ve now lost 6 straight games to the Cubs dating back to last season.

Mets vs Cubs Pick
Given the way this series has gone and the way the Cubs have dominated the Queens team of late, it’s no surprise that the home side are the favorites in the MLB odds for this one.
With both sides sending pitchers to the bunk that you can’t really rely on at this point, we have to give the Cubs the edge, considering they have the fresher bullpen and own the recent head-to-head meetings between the two.
Pick: Chicago Cubs Moneyline (-115)
