One week after Brooks Koepka won his third career PGA Championship and fifth career major title, the PGA Tour heads to Colonial Country Club for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland, who were co-runner ups at the PGA, are both in this field. They’re joined by folk hero Michael Block, who finished T-15th as a Club Pro last weekend, and the tournament organizers extended a sponsors exemption for him to compete.
Famed Colonial Country Club is a blast from the past track, with tree lined holes and it plays at just over 7,200 yards as a par-70. Last year, Sam Burns defeated Scheffler in a playoff at famed ‘Hogan’s Alley’. Given that it falls a week after a major championship, it’s a pretty decent field in Fort Worth with nine of the top-20 in the world teeing it up.

Scheffler is the clear cut +450 favorite to win his third PGA Tour title this season (WM Phoenix Open, Players Championship). Spieth is right behind him, and he’s had success at this course, winning in 2016. Hovland is coming off his best ever finish in a major championship, tying for second at the PGA.

Jordan Spieth Is a Horse for This Course
There are just some golf tournaments that are perfectly suitable for players, and this is one for Jordan Spieth. He’s a past champ, having won the 2016 iteration of the Charles Schwab, and he’s been second place on three occasions. In his ten all-time appearances at Colonial, Spieth has been inside the top-10 an astonishing eight times. Suffice to say, he’s put together some impressive ‘strokes gained’ stats at this tournament.
Jordan Spieth’s Strokes Gained Stats Last 36 Rounds at Colonial
Total | Tee-To-Green | Short Game | Putting | Ball Striking | Off-The-Tee | Approach |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 13 |
Spieth’s odds would be shorter if he came into this week totally healthy. However, he was forced to withdraw at the AT&T Byron Nelson two weeks ago because of a wrist injury. He gutted it out to play in the PGA Championship, however, and placed inside the top-30. He’s extremely comfortable on this track and always contends, so at +1200 odds, Spieth is very intriguing.

2023 Charles Schwab Challenge Picks and Value Bets
- Sam Burns (+2200): There’s really solid value for Sam Burns, given that he’s the defending champion and that six golfers sport shorter odds than him. He’s no stranger to going back-to-back in titles, having won the 2021 and 2022 Valspar Championship. He’s fourth in SG: putting for the season, which will be a huge boon for him. Though he’s missed his last two cuts, he’s not far removed from winning the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play this season.
- Chris Kirk (+5000): Chris Kirk is a past champion at Colonial (2015), and he’s racked up seven career top-20’s at this event. He got off the schneid with a victory earlier this campaign at the Honda Classic, and ranks ninth in strokes gained: around this green this season.
- Eric Cole (+8000): Eric Cole comes off a strong showing at the PGA Championship, where he was T-15th. Earlier this year, he was second at the Honda Classic, where he lost in a playoff to Chris Kirk. In the last 24 rounds on tour, he’s seventh in total strokes gained (of those competing) and eighth in SG: tee-to-green. He’ll be an interesting name in the top 10/20 markets.
