It’s a long season. That is the difference between baseball and all other sports, as one good month doesn’t mean much when considering a season consists of 162 games.
The Pittsburgh Pirates (21-16, 10-8 home) have discovered that over the last nine games. After beginning the season with a sizzling 20-8 record, significantly boosting their odds to win the NL central, the Bucs have fallen back to earth, losing eight of their last 9 contests.
On Wednesday, May 10th, they close out a three game set with the Colorado Rockies (15-22, 8-13 away) in a matinee affair with the first pitch scheduled for 12:35 pm ET on getaway day. This game will be broadcast on AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh and AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain.

This game will be the rubber match with Pittsburgh taking the opener to snap a seven game losing skid before going right back to their losing ways by dropping the second game of the series. Despite a terrible slide, the Pirates are still -155 chalk to close the series with a win.
Pittsburgh’s offense has been sputtering which is one of the reason the over/under total set at a rather high 9 runs is a bit of a surprise. The Pirates have failed to score over two runs in each of their last nine games, while Colorado has hit the under in 21 of 37 games this year, which comes out to 56.8% of the time.

Colorado vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers
Back from an ACL tear that cut short his 2022 season, Antonio Senzatela made an impressive first start for the Rockies last week, allowing only three hits in five innings. Unfortunately for the seven year veteran, one of those hits was a solo homer and his teammates couldn’t push a single run across the plate, causing him to take the loss.

One of the longest tenured members of Colorado, the righthander is still only 28-years old, but had one of the worst seasons of his career in an injury-shortened 2022 campaign. Senzatela had an earned run average of 5.07 and a 1.69 WHIP.
You’d think those numbers would be inflated by playing in the thin air at Coors Field, but the bulky pitcher actually fared much worse on the road where he went 0-5 with a brutal 6.41 ERA.

For the Bucs, the ageless Rich Hill gets the start. After looking like he might be on his last legs following two terrible outings to begin the year, the lefty has shown he can still be counted on as a steady, but not spectacular piece of a team’s rotation.
One of his best games of the year came just under a month ago against these same Rockies. In that outing, Hill pitched six innings allowing only a single run on a long ball, while punching out seven in a 14-3 Pittsburgh victory.
Pirates Offense Has Hit the Skids
Rather quickly, the Pirates have claimed the ominous distinction of owning one of the worst MLB lineups. Incredibly, they haven’t been able to score more than two runs in any of their last nine games.

During their past 12 games, Pittsburgh has been outscored 54-12. Luckily for the Pirates, they have dominated the Rockies so far this year, save for Tuesday night’s 10-1 loss.

One of the best early season moments for the Bucs came when outfielder Bryan Reynolds signed an eight-year extension in April, but even he has struggled with the stick since the calendar flipped to May, batting just .219 with no homers or runs batted in this month.
Rockies vs Orioles Predictions
Pegged as 100,000-1 longshots in the World Series odds, you won’t find the Rockies being made the favorites in many games this year. Only the Oakland A’s are considered as terrible as Colorado by online sportsbooks.
Still, the Pirates have been even worse lately. Hill is always a wild card wager when he’s on the mound and Senzatela performed well in his only appearance so far this year.
Our money pick in the MLB odds for this one is to avoid a prediction on who will win and stick with the under. Pittsburgh can’t score and we don’t see this being a runaway win for either team, so expect a game where runs will be at a premium despite the starting pitchers.
