Saturday afternoon brings some interleague play in the Majors as the Detroit Tigers (13-17, 5-10 away) visit the slumping St. Louis Cardinals (10-22, 5-11 away) at Busch Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:15 PM ET.
On the mound, it’s Spencer Turnbull for the Tigers, while the Cards counter with Adam Wainwright.
Tigers vs Cardinals Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Detroit Tigers | +175 | +1.5 (-115) | Ov 8.5 (-115) |
St. Louis Cardinals | -205 | -1.5 (-105) | Un 8.5 (-105) |
The Cardinals are a massive moneyline favorite at -205, while the Tigers come back at +175. The total in runs sits at 8.5. Detroit has won four of the last five meetings prior to the series opener on Friday.
Odds as of May 5th at DraftKings Sportsbook.
Detroit vs St. Louis Probable Pitchers
Outside of Eduardo Rodriguez, the Tigers’ rotation has been a nightmare. Unfortunately, that includes Turnbull, who is 1-4 with a brutal 6.84 ERA through six starts. He’s struck out just 18 batters in 26.1 innings while issuing 14 walks.
Last time out, the righty tossed four frames, allowing three runs on five hits to the Baltimore Orioles, and ended up taking the loss. He’s actually improved over his previous few outings, surrendering three earned at most. Back-to-back starts at the beginning of April where Turnbull gave up 12 runs combined hurt his ERA badly.
Turnbull vs Wainwright Stats
1-4 | Record | 11-12 |
6.84 | ERA | 3.71 |
26.1 | Innings Pitched | 191.2 |
18 | Strikeouts | 143 |
14 | Walks | 54 |
Wainright’s stats from 2022*
Wainwright went on the IL just before the season began but thankfully, he’s finally back. The Cardinals certainly need their veteran, who pitched for Team USA at the World Baseball Classic. Last year, Wainwright went 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA. Even at 41, he’s still effective.

Since Waino doesn’t throw overly hard anymore, he tends to rely on his off-speed stuff quite a bit, especially the curveball. Wainwright has only pitched against the Tigers twice in his career, compiling a 2.00 ERA.
A Series Win For Detroit
Not much is going right for the lowly Tigers. They have one of the worst MLB lineups around and their pitching staff is also in shambles. However, Detroit showed some life in their series with the Mets, sweeping the NL East powerhouse.

Get this, too. The Tigers lit up their two former aces in Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Well, they hit around Scherzer more than Verlander but regardless, it was a promising sign. At 13-17 heading into Friday, not all is lost for this ball club just yet. But, more consistency is needed all around.
Cardinals in Shambles
You know it’s bad when your own fans boo you off the field. The Cardinals are stacked with talent but are failing to live up to expectations with a putrid 10-22 record. Ahead of Friday, St. Louis has lost six in a row and nine of their last 10.
But, getting Wainwright back is certainly seen as a positive for a rotation that owns a 5.48 ERA. Hopefully, he can put his best foot forward on Saturday against an underwhelming offense.
Tigers vs Cardinals Prediction
I believe Wainwright pitches well here. Despite Detroit’s recent success against St. Louis, the Cardinals’ runline looks good.
Pick: Cardinals -1.5 (-105)
