The Los Angeles Dodgers (13-11, 7-5 away) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (16-8, 7-4 home) finish up a three-game series on Thursday afternoon at PNC Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:35 PM ET.
We have an intriguing matchup on the hill as Julio Urias and Mitch Keller go toe to toe, two pitchers who are enjoying solid starts to the 2023 season. Pittsburgh has actually won five of the last six meetings with LA ahead of Wednesday’s contest.

Although the Bucs’ have the superior record, the Dodgers are the favorite with -170 moneyline odds. Pittsburgh comes back at +145.

Los Angeles vs Pittsburgh Probable Pitchers
Urias was dealing through his first four appearances, allowing just five earned runs in total. But, the Mexican ran into a red-hot Cubs lineup last time out, giving up five earned in 3.1 innings of work before exiting. That was his worst outing yet.

But, the 26-year-old still owns a 3-2 record and 3.33 ERA, striking out 30 in 27 frames while issuing a mere five free passes. He also tends to pitch well in his career against the Pirates, compiling a 3.19 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts.

Keller has been one of several bright spots for Pittsburgh this year, going 2-0 with a 3.64 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched. Aside from also owning a 1.25 WHIP, he’s racked up 30 strikeouts. On April 21st, Keller pounded the strike zone for six innings, surrendering a mere two earned versus Cincinnati, walking just one batter.
In fact, the righty has yet to give up more than four runs in a single start in 23′. He’s proven to be very reliable. However, the Dodgers tend to hit him around. Keller is 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA in two career outings against them.

Dodgers Off to a Slow Start
For a team with so much star power, it’s been an underwhelming start to the campaign for Los Angeles. They still possess one of the best MLB lineups around and score 5.4 runs per game while slugging 44 homers, but the pitching staff is not putting their best forward. Especially, the back end of the rotation.

Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, and Urias are all in the 3.00 ERA range, but Noah Syndergaard and Michael Grove are absolutely struggling with ERAs well over six. That has to improve.
Pirates One of the Biggest Surprises in MLB
Literally no one could’ve predicted the Bucs would be one of the best teams in the Majors with a 16-8 record. But, they’ve surprised everybody and currently sit at the top of the National League Central. On both sides of the ball, Pittsburgh is fundamentally sound.
Offensively, both Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen are leading the way with five homers apiece. Reynolds actually just inked a new extension with the team as well after months of trade rumors. On the hill, Keller, Johan Oviedo, and Vince Velasquez are spearheading the rotation.
Dodgers vs Pirates Prediction
I do expect Urias to bounce back after a brutal outing and Keller doesn’t exactly have a lot of success against the Dodgers. Take the LA moneyline.
