The top-level ATP Tour players were scattered around three tournaments this week – Banja Luka, Munich and Barcelona. But two of the younger top clay-courters, Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, were at the ATP 500-level event in Barcelona and will meet in the final Sunday (10 a.m. EDT)

Alcaraz to Final Without Loss of a Set
The world No. 2 skipped the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 after deep runs at Indian Wells (champion) and Miami (semifinals) to take care of a few niggles.
It seems to have done him worlds of good; the Spaniard hasn’t dropped a set on his road to the Barcelona final with wins over Nuno Borges, No. 13 seed Roberto Bautista Agut, No. 10 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and No. 12 seed Dan Evans in the semifinals.
Evans was a surprise semifinalist, getting through a section that featured struggling No. 3 seed Casper Ruud and No. 6 seed Karen Khachanov (whom Evans beat in straight sets).
But the Brit was no match for Alcaraz, who broke him five times in a win that took an hour and 20 minutes Saturday.
Tsitsipas Edges Past Musetti
The appearance of an odd-looking piece of kinesio tape on Tsisipas’s forearm this week in Barcelona was visible evidence of the struggle 2023 has been for the Greek star on the health front. And that, even though he’s 20-5 on the season going into the Barcelona final.
The early-season issue was actually a shoulder injury, which he attributed to some technical changes he made in his serve in the off-season. But it stopped his momentum after the Australian Open final; he went a pedestrian 5-4 after that.

Emphatic wins over Denis Shapovalov and Alex de Minaur helped create it again. And his 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over a fresh Lorenzo Musetti in the semifinals also would boost his confidence.

It began with crushing disappointment for Tsitsipas, who was the No. 3 seed at the 2021 US Open, while 18-year-old Alcaraz was a rising star but still ranked No. 55 and making his US Open debut.
The marathon lasted over four hours, and set the tone for the rivalry.
They met six months later in Miami, with Alcaraz winning in straight sets (and winning the tournament).
A year ago in Barcelona, Alcaraz won in three sets in the quarterfinals, and went on to win that tournament as well.
Since then, he’s become a Grand Slam champion and has held the No. 1 ranking; Tsitsipas hasn’t been playing as well this year as he was back then.
Alcaraz vs Tsitsipas Prediction
With Rafael Nadal’s immediate future unclear, and with Novak Djokovic losing early in Bosnia then withdrawing from Madrid next week with an elbow issue, the best clay-courters in the world aren’t at their best. Which means these two will be among the favorites for the French Open.
Sunday’s match is a signpost for this clay-court season, and there is little to indicate that Alcaraz won’t continue his winning ways and defend his Barcelona title.
But it should be competitive.
