Following Sam Burns’ victory at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the PGA Tour heads to San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open. Burns isn’t competing at this tournament, which is the last one before the Masters tees off April 6th. Those players who aren’t already exempt into Augusta National can punch their ticket to the event, should they win the Valero Texas Open.
Tyrrell Hatton and Hideki Matsuyama are the only two golfers in the top-25 of the world rankings teeing it up at TPC San Antonio. Most big guns have opted for rest as they prepare for the first major championship of the season. This championship always produces a close finish, with all but one of the previous 15 champions winning by two or fewer strokes.
2023 Valero Texas Open Odds

---|---|
Tyrrell Hatton | +1200 |
Rickie Fowler | +1600 |
Corey Conners | +2000 |
Hideki Matsuyama | +2200 |
Si Woo Kim | +2200 |
Taylor Montgomery | +2200 |
Chris Kirk | +3000 |
Davis Riley | +3000 |
Matt Kuchar | +3500 |
J.J. Spaun | +3500 |
Alex Noren | +3500 |
Cam Davis | +4000 |
Ryan Fox | +4000 |
Matt Wallace | +4500 |
Brendon Todd | +4500 |
Thomas Detry | +4500 |
Nicolai Hojgaard | +4500 |
Ben Griffin | +4500 |
Taylor Pendrith | +5000 |
Adam Schenk | +5000 |
The highest ranked golfer competing is Tyrrell Hatton (17th), and he’s +1200 to take his second PGA Tour title. He comes in following a disappointing WGC-Dell Match Play, but before that had a pair of top-5’s. Rickie Fowler has the second shortest odds at +1600. He needs a victory to qualify for the Masters. The defending champion of the Valero Texas Open is J.J. Spaun (+3500).

Rickie Fowler Poised For Victory
Rickie Fowler has built himself back up this season, following a prolonged stretch of play that wasn’t up to his typical standards. He’s shot up the world rankings from 185th at the end of last season to 59th now. That’s been aided by a runner-up at the Zozo Championship, and in five of his last six tourneys, he’s posted top-20’s (the other was a T-31st). He’s not currently qualified for the Masters, however, so he has extra incentive to get over the finish line at the Valero Texas Open.
Rickie Fowler’s Strokes Gained Stats Last 24 Rounds
Approach | Total | Tee-To-Green | Ball Striking | Putting | Short Game |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 15 | 23 |
This field isn’t particularly deep, compared to the other tournaments that Fowler was posting solid results in the last few months. At +1600, it’s still reasonable enough odds for a player who posted a pair of top-20’s at the Valero in 2019 and 2021.
Past Five Valero Texas Open Winners

2017 | Kevin Chappell |

2023 Valero Texas Open Picks and Value Bets
- Davis Riley (+3000): Davis Riley was a popular pick last year to get his first win, as he racked up six top-10’s. It hasn’t been quite as lucrative this year, but he’s showing signs of breaking through, with four top-30’s in his last five starts, highlighted by a T-8th at Bay Hill. In his last three stroke play events, he’s gained over nine strokes on the greens.
- Matt Wallace (+4500): Very intriguing odds for Englishmen Matt Wallace, who won the opposite field Corales Puntacana Championship on Sunday for his first title. That was on the heels of a T-7th at the Valspar, and he also was third at this tournament in 2021.
- Charley Hoffman (+11000): Though he comes into this week without much form, something changes when Charley Hoffman steps onto these grounds. He’s a past champion (2016), and also boasts runner-ups in 2011, 2019 and 2021 here, along with a 3rd in 2013. He’s tops in total strokes gained the last twelve rounds on this track. He’ll be an interesting name to monitor in the top 10/20 markets.
