Updated March Madness Odds After Princeton Stuns Arizona, Furman Beats Virginia

Not even halfway through the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, the March Madness bracket has already undergone some massive o.

In the early window on Thursday, Furman erased a double-digit second-half deficit to stun Virginia, nearly at the buzzer.

Not to be outdone, No. 15 Princeton became the third 15-seed in as many year to take down a No. 2, recording their own comeback win over Arizona.

Furman’s Pulls Off Stunning Comeback Over Virginia

Plenty of experts predicted Furman upsetting Virginia as a 5.5-point underdog. The offensively-challenged Cavaliers play at a dreadfully slow pace and that leads to close, low-scoring games with plenty of variability.

But the manner in which Furman took down UVA was truly stunning.

The Cavaliers held a 50-38 lead with a little over ten minutes to play. The Paladins whittled it down but still trailed by two with under five seconds remaining and UVA inbounding the ball. 

Then this happened.

The Wahoos got a decent look the end but could only clank iron.

Furman’s title odds improved from +75000 to +35000 in the aftermath.

Next up is a date with No. 5 San Diego State, which handled No. 12 Charleston (63-57). If they make it through that gauntlet, a meeting with either No. 1 Alabama or No. 8 Maryland awaits.

Princeton Shocks Arizona with Second-Half Comeback

Not to be outdone, the Ivy League’s Princeton Tigers, a No. 15 seed, took down Pac-12 Tournament champion Arizona, the No. 2 seed in the South Region.

Like Furman before them, the Tigers faced a large second-half deficit: Arizona led 51-41 with 8:07 to play. But Princeton closed the game on a mind-boggling 18-4 run to send the Pac-12 champs home early.

As he’s done most of the season, senior forward Tosun Evbuomwan paced Princeton with 15 points (right on his season average), while six other players had between 6 and 9 points for the balanced Tigers.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Princeton’s odds to win the NCAA Tournament improved from +500000 to +80000. Still a massive longshot, but oddsmakers have to take No. 15 seeds seriously after St Peter’s run to the Elite Eight last year. The Tigers’ Final Four odds moved from +30000 (0.33% implied probability) to +4000 (2.44% implied probability).

Princeton will face No. 7 Missouri in the second round. The Tigers were impressive in their upset over slightly-favored Utah State, holding one of the nation’s most-prolific offenses to just 65 points (76-65).
