Freiburg vs Juventus Preview
It was a tough night for Freiburg in Turin. But after failing to register a single shot on target and, in fact, only managing one off-target, to head back to Germany with just a one-goal deficit was a decent outcome for Die Breisgauer.
But while they lacked punch in offense and rode their luck at times, they defended heroically and, in doing so, have given themselves a genuine chance of making it to the last eight of this competition. They do though need to find some potency in attack from somewhere after scoring just 14 times in their 11 games in 2023.

Freigburg’s Fine Season Continues
In the Bundesliga, Freiburg have performed well despite their modest return of goals and currently sit in fifth, just seven points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich. They look well placed to battle it out for a Champions League place and at the weekend recorded an important 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim with Ritsu Doan grabbing an 89th-minute finish winner.
The Europa-Park Stadion has turned into something of a fortress – they are unbeaten there in 11 league games – and have yet to lose the second league of a European tie, albeit from a sample of just three games. Everything points to a nerve-racking but potentially thrilling night in Freiburg.
Di Maria Leads the Juve Charge
For Juve, Di Maria continued his outstanding Europa League form – he scored a hat-trick in Nantes in the second leg of their playoff qualifier – with the crucial winner in the first leg of this tie. Despite now being in his 35th year, the Argentinian international remains one of Juve’s key players.
While the Europa League is not the Old Lady’s competition of choice – they ended up there after bombing in their Champions League group, finishing behind Benfica and PSG – this is now, along with the Coppa Italia, their joint-best chance of silverware this season after having been docked 15 points in Serie A due to financial irregularities.

Good Juve Record Against German Opponents
Max Allegri’s men currently lie seventh in the Serie A (after the points deduction) and secured a 4-2 win over Sampdoria at the weekend but it left them 10 points behind the top four with 12 games remaining. Therefore, their best route to next season’s Champions League would be to win this competition.
Juve’s record against German teams is good, having lost just one of their last nine and winning their last three without conceding a single goal. They have also managed to progress in each of their last nine European knockout ties where they took a lead into the second leg. The omens are good for the Old Lady.

Freiburg vs Juventus Prediction
The atmosphere inside the Europa-Park Stadion will be crackling by kick-off time and this will be a challenging night for Juve, but if there’s one team equipped to handle such a night it’s them.
The Old Lady will be buoyed by their 3-0 win in Nantes in the last round and with them still in plus money, the value here is with the away win.
