After losing 2-0 in the first leg at home, Brugge needs to produce something really special here to even give themselves a chance. Poor defending from Scott Parker’s men in the first leg has left them with a mountain to climb.

Benfica vs Club Brugge Preview
The Eagles are within touching distance of a place in the last eight after securing a 2-0 win in Brugge courtesy of two defensive howlers from the Belgians.
After a goalless first half, Joao Mario put Benfica ahead from the penalty spot after Jack Hendry had tripped Goncalo Ramos, and then with just two minutes remaining the tie was all but put to bed when David Neres pounced on a mistake from Brandon Mechele.
If Benfica gets the job done, it will be the second consecutive season they have made it to the UCL quarterfinals, albeit they were knocked out of the last eight in last season’s competition by Liverpool.

The Eagles Are Flying
The Eagles still have work to do though and have exited the tournament at this stage before after winning the first leg – against Borussia Dortmund in the 2016-17 season. But they come into this in great form, with three straight wins in domestic soccer behind them since the win in Brugge.
On Friday night, a comfortable 2-0 win over mid-table Famalicao – two goals from Ramos – took them eight points clear at the top of the Primeira Liga.
Brugge on the Ropes
Parker’s time in the Brugge hot seat has not gone as he or the club had planned and defeat in Lisbon may well signal the end of his time there. His cause was not helped by those two defensive howlers in the first leg but domestically Brugge have struggled too.
Club are currently on a miserable run of form – just two wins from their last 13 matches – and have slipped to fourth in the Belgian Pro League table, 21 points adrift of leaders, Genk. There now appears little chance of them retaining their league title, so the pressure on Parker is huge.

Oostende Disaster for Parker
Despite recording a spirited 2-0 win over the current league leaders on matchday 27 of the Pro League, Brugge were brought crashing back to earth last Friday night when they were thrashed 3-0 by relegation-threatened Oostende. So poor was the performance, Parker even questioned after the game if he would still be in charge for this game.
The only real positive for Brugge fans is that their recent record on the road in the UCL is pretty good, with three consecutive clean sheets, but it’s hard to make a case for another on Tuesday.

Benfica vs Club Brugge Prediction
The odds appear stacked against Parker and Brugge and there looks like no way through to the last eight for the Belgian champions. Worth noting though is that in the circumstances, there is no incentive here for Benfica to be expansive and to attack in numbers.
Therefore, on the basis of a boring, uneventful draw being more than enough for Benfica’s safe passage through to the quarters, I’m going bold here and predicting that Brugge will grab an unlikely tie. At nearly 4/1 it offers great value in the Benfica vs Club Brugge odds.
