Patrick Mahomes is the next great QB tasked with breaking a curse that’s taken over this century.
On Thursday, Mahomes was awarded his second regular-season MVP Trophy during the NFL Honors show.
He will now try to become first pivot in the 2000’s to finish off the campaign with a Super Bowl championship.
Is this the guy that finally comes through? Or should you factor this in when reviewing the odds to win the Super Bowl, as the Chiefs face off with the Eagles in Super Bowl 57?

Has a QB Ever Won an MVP and a Super Bowl?
The last time a quarterback pulled this off was Kurt Warner in 1999, when the Rams outlasted the Tennessee Titans 23-16 to take Super Bowl 24.
Coincidentally, Warner is the one who started the new winless streak. The 2001 MVP and the “Greatest Show on Turf” was grounded in Super Bowl 26 by an upstart New England team 20-17. It was a team quarterbacked by a young guy by the name of Tom Brady.
NFL MVP and Super Bowl Results Since 2000
Player | Team | MVP Year | Super Bowl Result |
---|---|---|---|
Tom Brady | Patriots | 2017 | Lost to Eagles: 41-33 |
Matt Ryan | Falcon | 2016 | Lost to Patriots: 34-28 |
Cam Newton | Panthers | 2015 | Lost to Broncos: 24-10 |
Peyton Manning | Broncos | 2013 | Lost to Seahawks: 43-8 |
Peyton Manning | Colts | 2009 | Lost to Saints: 31-17 |
Tom Brady | Patriots | 2007 | Lost to Giants: 17-14 |
Shaun Alexander | Seahawks | 2005 | Lost to Steelers: 21-10 |
Rich Gannon | Raiders | 2002 | Lost to Buccaneers: 48-21 |
Kurt Warner | Rams | 2001 | Lost to Patriots: 20-17 |
In all, eight quarterbacks have failed to bag the double, and it’s a who’s-who of names. Brady is on that list twice, including the painful 2007 year, when he and Randy Moss lit the NFL on fire en route to a perfect record, only to fall to the New York Giants in Super Bowl 42.
Peyton Manning is a dubious 2-timer as well, winning the MVP award in both 2009 (with Indy) and 2013 (with Denver), only to lose to the Saints (Super Bowl 44) and Seahawks (Super Bowl 48).
Throw in 2005 MVP Shaun Alexander, whose Seattle Seahawks lost 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl 30 and that’s nine MVPs failing to deliver a dream season, losing in the season finale.
When Was the Last Time an NFL MVP Won the Super Bowl?
The list is short, and they all came prior to the 2000s.
In all, 20 players have captured the NFL MVP award and 10 have gone on to win the big game. Outside of the quarterback position, there are only four non-QB’s that have completed the double.

• Rod Smith: 5-152-1 rec

The most recent was Denver Broncos’ running back Terrell Davis, who ran for 2000+ yards in his 1998 MVP season, capping it with Denver’s 2nd-straight title in Super Bowl XXXIII, beating the Falcons 34-19.
Others on that small list include Emmitt Smith, Lawrence Taylor and Washington kicker Mark Moseley. That might be the biggest shocker in the history of sports: Moseley nailed 20 of 21 field goals to win NFL MVP in 1982. This will never happen again.

Should You Still Wager on the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57?
There are likely plenty of types of Super Bowl bets you’ve become familiar with in the leadup to the Super Bowl, but consider this nugget of information more of an anomaly than a curse.
Mahomes is, by most accounts, the best player in the league right now, and a no-brainer to win MVP. From what Andy Reid has said, that high ankle injury suffered in the Divisional Round playoff against Jacksonville won’t be a factor.

He’s literally the reason Kansas City will win the Super Bowl, if they do knock off Philly as Super Bowl betting underdogs. It won’t be a curse that stops them, but a really good Eagles’ offense led by Jalen Hurts and a defensive front that has four players — four! — with double digit sacks.
