The Kansas City Chiefs entered Conference Championship Weekend as the betting favorite in the Super Bowl odds.
Yet, after clinching a berth in the Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Patrick Mahomes is looking up at the betting favorite in the latest Super Bowl MVP odds.
That would be opposing pivot Jalen Hurts, who ran with Mahomes at the top of the NFL MVP odds most of the season.
Both QBs are still working their way back to full strength, as Mahomes (high ankle sprain) and Hurts (shoulder) both admitted they weren’t yet 100% heading into the NFL’s Final Four.
Does that open the door for other stars to sneak in for the trophy?
Let’s run down the odds and identify the bets you should be targeting.

Both teams have title wins under their belt in the last five years. The Eagles bounced the Patriots in Super Bowl 52, while the Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl 54.

The Case For Mahomes and Hurts
Like the NFL’s regular season MVP award, the pick skews to the quarterback position.
In Super Bowl history, a QB has been tabbed MVP 31 times, more than four times more than both the wide receiver and running back position, which have seven each. One of those is owned by Mahomes for his work in Super Bowl 54.
In their 23-20 win over the Bengals in the AFC Championship, Mahomes went 29-for-43 for 326 yards and a pair of TD passes, just a week after suffering his injury against the Jaguars.
He was clearly compromised, as he rushed just three times all game, though the final carry drew a personal foul to set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning 45-yard field goal.

Hurts had a mostly pedestrian passing performance, going 15-for-25 for 121 yards, as the Eagles whipped the injury-riddled 49ers 31-7. He also added 11 carries for 39 yards and a score.
A right-shoulder sprain forced him to miss two games late in the regular season, and the title game will be his fourth game back. He’s thrown for just 275 yards in two playoff games, adding 20 carries for 73 yards and two scores.
The title bye week will be a huge help to both, and should have them closer to their best selves come kickoff.

Travis Kelce, AJ Brown Worth Consideration
While Mahomes is considered the best player in the league, tight end Travis Kelce is highly regarded as the best tight end that has ever played the game.
Even with back spasms potentially sidelining him Sunday, Kelce looked his usual, reliable self. He finished with seven grabs for 78 yards and a TD.
That was his 15th career playoff TD in 17 games, tying him with Rob Gronkowski for second all-time. But bettor beware: no tight end has ever won Super Bowl MVP.

As for Brown, he’s coming off another quiet playoff performance, catching just four balls for 28 yards vs San Fran. He had three catches for 22 yards in a blowout win over the Giants in the divisional round.
Is a breakout coming? Well, consider that this are two of the three lowest-yardage outputs all season. He went for at least 85 yards receiving in nine games this year, including five games topping 100.
Cooper Kupp won MVP last year, and receivers have gone back-to-back MVPs twice in Super Bowl history, the latest in 2005 (Deion Branch) and 2006 (Hines Ward).
Super Bowl MVP Longshots to Consider
If you think there’s a Malcolm Smith (2014) or Dexter Jackson (2003) lurking, defense might be the key in Super Bowl 57. The Eagles had an NFL-record four players that had double-digit sacks.
Haason Reddick led them all with 17.5, and he was a wrecking ball against Frisco. One of his two sacks severely limited Niners’ QB Brock Purdy. He also forced a fumble and recovered another fumble.
All-pro Chris Jones hadn’t had a sack in the playoffs in his career, but he got to Joe Burrow twice on Sunday, and will be a key to the Chiefs’ gameplan to stall Philly’s offensive attack.
Ten defensive players across all positions have been named MVP, the latest being Denver LB Von Miller in Super Bowl 50.
Our pick? Hard to go against the best player in the world. That extra week should bring Mahomes back to his world-beater level of play.
