By Robert Duff in Entertainment
Published:

- Billionaire Elon Musk (+225) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (+450) are the top betting choices to win Time Person of the Year for 2023
- Zelenskyy (2022) and Musk (2021) are the past two winners of the honor
- Richard Nixon (1971-72) is the only back-to-back winner of Time Person of the Year
Oddsmakers are projecting a repeat performance when the Time Person of the Year Award winner for 2023 is eventually announced. But will it be a back-to-back winner?
Billionaire investor Elon Musk, whose purchase and revamping of Twitter was a lightning rod for criticism, is the +225 favorite to earn the honor. Musk was the 2021 Time Person of the Year.
Next up in this betting market is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He was revealed last month as the 2022 winner.

Not Uncommon To Two-Time Person of Year
Along with Musk and Zelenskyy, US President Joe Biden (2020) and environmental activist Greta Thunberg (2019) are others on the current odds board who won the award previously.
While 14 people have received time Person of the Year on multiple occasions – former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the honor three times – just one man so far was able to claim the award in successive years.
That would be disgraced former US President Richard Nixon. Nixon, who tendered his resignation in the midst of his second term in the White House in 1974 due to the Watergate scandal. Nixon was Time Person of the Year in 1971 and 1972.
Musk Making News
At the moment, Musk is certainly on everyone’s mind. His on-again, off-again, on-again takeover of Twitter was dominating the headlines in late 2022. The changes he’s making to the platform since then are also causing much consternation among the masses.
12 months ago, I was Person of the Year
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 4, 2023
One thing about Musk is that he displays a knack for keeping his name in front of people. But it’s also possible that the flame of attention burning so brightly around him at the moment will extinguish before long.
Time has never displayed any resistance to recognizing controversial , divisive or even dangerous individuals. Past winners of Time Person of the Year include Donald Trump (2016), Haile Selaase (1935), Wallis Simpson (1936), Adolf Hitler (1938), Ayatollah Khomeini (1979) and Vladimir Putin (2007). Joseph Stalin was a two-time winner of the award.
Zelenskyy A Popular Person
Recently speaking in front of Congress, Zelenskyy, the leader of Ukraine’s astonishing resistance to their Russian invaders has turned him into an international icon.
Everyone loves an underdog and the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people has certainly caught the world’s attention while earning their respect and admiration. But as noted above, winning Time Person of the Year two years in a row is a rare accomplishment.
Garland, DeSantis Offer Value
It’s a long year and it’s barely started. Today’s newsmakers might be long forgotten in a few months time. That’s why it’s wise to try and project what in 2023 might be unfolding in terms of storylines.
Certainly, if Trump’s star continues to fade and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (+1500) emerges as the frontrunner to be the 2024 GOP Presidential nominee, that will be a huge story.
Another factor to keep an eye on are the Iran protesters (+1000). Just as similar protests led to the rise of Khomeini in 1979, if they manage to topple the ruling government, it could lead to major change in the Middle East. Seven times since 2002, Time has opted to honor a group of people as their Persons of the Year.
Now: Attorney General Merrick Garland releases a statement ahead of the Jan 6 anniversary.

However, the real value here could be offered by Merrick Garland (+1000). If the US Attorney General were to indict Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, for stealing top secret documents, or other crimes for that matter, it would be groundbreaking news.
If that happens, all bets are off. Check that. If that happens, all bets should be on Garland.
