Washington figured to face a lot of questions heading into the season. Nicklas Backstrom (hip) and Tom Wilson (offseason surgery) were expected to be out for a good while. So far, the Capitals treading water is still a surprise to some pundits.

The Washington Capitals getting cratered in their defensive zone keeps happening more often this season. That presents itself as a normal trend. Seattle, on Thursday night, out-attempted Washington in shots 63-30 at even strength.

Seattle mentioned how good Darcy Kuemper was in goal. That has been one of the few bright spots this season along with Alexander Ovechkin chasing the 800-goal plateau. Honestly, Washington has been mediocre.

Calgary Flames Betting Analysis

The Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals score goals at a bottom-third pace. However, the problems are somewhat different for the teams. Calgary allows less shots and scoring chances than Washington yet the results are relatively the same. After starting out 5-1, the Flames are now at .500 again.  Their schedule ranks as toughest in the league, but injuries have not been an issue.

Alas, even with the Flames’ ability to suppress scoring chances and shots, their goaltenders cannot make the extra saves they need to. Starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom has a save percentage below .890. His odds to win the Vezina Trophy plummeted to +2200. Worse, the Flames’ backup, Dan Vladar, has performed better (.913 save percentage), but has just two wins in six starts. Markstrom projects to start tonight.
