These are not the types of struggles we’re used to from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sidney Crosby’s team doesn’t usually go on lengthy runs of losing. This is a franchise that has qualified for the playoffs every season since 2005-06 after all. They had every opportunity to put an end to their losing streak on Tuesday. Then they gave up four unanswered goals to the Bruins.
For the Sabres, they’re already eyeing their second three-game winning streak of this young season. While it’s early, there’s some cautious optimism brewing in Buffalo.
Things get underway at 7:30 pm from KeyBank Center. You can catch the action on TNT.

Buffalo are home underdogs heading into Wednesday, despite the fact they’re the hotter of the two teams. Pittsburgh’s losing streak wasn’t enough to sink their fortunes in the NHL odds. Pittsburgh was only able to win once on their five game road trip, capping it off with four-straight losses before Tuesday’s debacle.
In terms of the total, Pittsburgh’s defense could almost get you the over on its own. They’ve allowed three goals or more in seven of their last eight. That’s good news for a Buffalo offense that’s scored four or more goals in six of their last eight games.
Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Outlook
After starting strong, the Penguins went ice cold. And there were very few positives to draw on.
Everything coincided with that Western road trip.
Penguins Five Game Road Trip
Opponent | Final Score | Penguins Moneyline | Over/Under |
---|---|---|---|
Oct 29 @ SEA | 3-1 SEA | -134 | 6.5 (Under) |
Oct 28 @ VAN | 5-1 VAN | -188 | 6.5 (Under) |
Oct 25 @ CGY | 4-1 CGY | +164 | 6.5 (Under) |
Oct 24 @ EDM | 6-3 EDM | +112 | 6.5 (Over) |
Oct 22 @ CBJ | 6-3 PIT | -166 | 6.5 (Over) |
That five gamer started off in Columbus on October 22nd. From there it was one travel day and a back-to-back in the Battle of Alberta, with another travel day and a back-to-back on the Pacific Coast.
Sidney Crosby went three games without a point, while Bryan Rust scored once in those five games. Kasperi Kapanen, Jeff Carter and Jason Zucker managed seven assists combined over that stretch.
Remember how Twitter had an utter meltdown after #Sabres loss in Seattle?
Well, did you see what the #Pens just did in the same four places? Went 0-4 and outscored 17-6.
Yes, I said the Penguins.

At least things got better offensively on Tuesday. Crosby opened the scoring and Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist in the second period alone. Rust and Rickard Rakell picked up goals as well.
No matter how much you score though, blowing a 5-2 lead doesn’t inspire much confidence.
Buffalo Sabres Betting Outlook
The Sabres offense continues to hum along.
Buffalo had two big offensive explosions against Detroit on Monday. They scored three goals in just over 12 minutes in the second, and managed another four in the final eight minutes to close things out.
Sabres Last Five Games
Opponent | Final Score | Sabres Moneyline | Over/Under |
---|---|---|---|
Oct 31 vs DET | 8-3 BUF | -155 | 6.5 (Over) |
Oct 29 vs CHI | 4-3 (OT) BUF | -190 | 6.5 (Over) |
Oct 27 vs MTL | 3-2 MTL | -195 | 6.5 (Under) |
Oct 25 @ SEA | 5-1 SEA | +116 | 6.5 (Under) |
Oct 22 @ VAN | 5-1 BUF | +138 | 6.5 (Under) |
As good as their offense has been, it’s the goaltending that’s really turning heads for Buffalo.
Eric Comrie wasn’t lights-out against Detroit, but he navigated things well enough to win. Then there’s Craig Anderson. The 41-year old has turned back the clock in Buffalo, to the tune of a 166 GAA and a .946 save percentage.
Penguins vs Sabres Pick
These two played twice in the preseason, so while you can’t put a ton of stock in those results, they still earned a split.
Victor Olofsson and Tage Thompson scored in Buffalo’s 3-1 win. Pittsburgh saw a number of regulars contribute in their 7-1 win, including Guentzel, Rust, and Crosby twice. So we’ll stay with a familiar face on the parlay.
Penguins vs Sabres Same-Game Parlay
Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Both teams to score two goals | -240 |
Jake Guentzel to score anytime | +128 |
Parlay Odds | +195 |
*Parlay odds available via Barstool Sportsbook
Guentzel has been red-hot, but he was held off the scoresheet on Tuesday. It’s time to back him on Wednesday. With the expected starters being Comrie and Casey DeSmith, both teams to score twice seems like a pretty safe strategy.
The expectation for this one is that there will be a lot of scoring. And backing the over is the right play. Pittsburgh hasn’t given us a reason to have a ton of faith in this game going under, and both teams have plenty of firepower.
The Pick: Over 6.5 (-108); 1 unit
