Despite losing 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt on the penultimate matchday of the group stage, there is still a route to the last 16 for Marseille. They will need to find a way to beat Tottenham to make this happen though and a draw, because of the defeat in Germany, won’t be good enough.

But it’s inconsistency that has led Marseille to this must-win scenario. In both Europe and domestically they have played really well at times but also sloppily in some games. This weekend was a perfect example when they squandered a 2-0 lead against Strasbourg to end up drawing 2-2.

Poor Home Form a Worry for Tudor

Manager Igor Tudor was far from impressed with the dropped points in Strasbourg – they’ve now dropped to fifth in Ligue 1 – not least because it meant they head into this vital game off the back of a run of three losses and a draw in their last four games.

Marseille’s home form is also patchy – just one win in their last five – but they will be hoping their fans will turn the Velodrome into a cauldron of noise and fervor. If they beat Spurs it will be their first-ever win over English opposition in the Champions League.

Late Drama and Conte Sees Red

Spurs thought they’d scored a last-minute winner in last week’s round 5 tie with Sporting Lisbon but were denied by a dubious-looking VAR call. The win would have sent them through to the last 16 but it’s now all in the melting pot. In the ensuing protests, Spurs coach Antonio Conte was sent off.

As a result, Tottenham’s leader will watch from the stands in Marseille as his team look to overcome the final and most difficult hurdle in order to stay in the competition. A draw will be enough for the Lillywhites.

Spurs Missing Richarlison

Spurs, like Marseille, are currently on a rollercoaster run of form and at the weekend were 2-0 down to newly promoted Bournemouth before storming back to secure a vital 3-2 win. It meant they stayed third in the EPL.

Interestingly, and perhaps worryingly for Spurs, they have never beaten a team from France away from home in any of the European competitions, although they did beat Marseille 2-0 in the reverse fixture in September. The scorer of both goals that evening, Richarlison, will miss out this time through injury.

With Spurs never having won on French soil and Marseille having never beaten English opposition in the UCL, it feels like something has to give. Equally, it is conceivable that both records could hold and a nervy draw would be enough to see Tottenham through by the thinnest of margins.

At +245, for me, that’s where the value lies.
