49ers Super Bowl Odds After Trading for Christian McCaffrey; San Fran Now -110 to Win NFC West

On paper, the arrival of former All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers is already creating a buzz around last season’s runner-up for the NFC title.

When he’s healthy, McCaffrey is a threat both running the ball and catching passes out of the backfield. Twice he’s gained over 1,000 yards on the ground. In 2019, McCaffrey rushed 287 times for 1,387 yards and caught 116 passes for 1,005 yards. That season, McCaffrey ran for 15 TDs and caught an additional four TD passes.

However, he’s also missed 23 games through injury over his NFL career. He missed 10 games last season and 13 in 2020.

McCaffrey has played every game this season. Oddsmakers, weighing the likelihood that this will continue to be the case, are seeing San Francisco as a much more dangerous threat in the Super Bowl odds. The 49ers are at +1400. That’s fifth-best overall and third among NFC teams.

The last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl in 1994, McCaffrey’s dad Ed was a wide receiver on the team. They’re now the fifth-favored team in the odds above at +1400.

McCaffrey Bringing Unique Skill Set to San Francisco

There’s no more unique and versatile running back in the NFL than a healthy McCaffrey. The problem is, keeping McCaffrey healthy is proving to be a uniquely challenging pursuit in recent seasons.

This season it’s been so far, so good. McCaffrey has started all six games for the Panthers. Twice he rushed for over 100 yards for the dismal 1-5 Carolina squad.

Out of the backfield he’s caught 23 passes with one TD, cementing his status as the NFL’s best all-purpose back.

San Francisco Running a Lot of Running Backs Out There

The frequently injured McCaffrey should fit right into the San Francisco backfield. Injuries have run rampant through the 49ers roster and their running back room.

Elijah Mitchell was lost to a Week 1 knee injury for the second consecutive season. Ty Wilson-Price (ankle), and Tevin Coleman (COVID-19) have also missed time. Only Jeff Wilson, who leads the team in rushing with 400 yards, had suited up for all six games so far this season. But he’s only started four of those games.

During his NFL career, McCaffrey has missed 23 games through injury. His name has populated an NFL injury report 29 times during his playing career.

Odds Shortening All Over On 49ers

Along with their Super Bowl odds shortening to +1400 from +2200, San Francisco’s betting lines are are dipping to lower numbers across a number of betting markets. Though the 49ers have played in Super Bowl 47 and 54 in recent years, it’s necessary to go all the way back to Super Bowl 29 in order to find a San Francisco team winning the big game.

Last season, the 49ers went all the way to the NFC Championship Game as a Wild Card. At +600, San Francisco is the third betting choice in the NFC Championship odds.

The addition of McCaffrey has also lowered San Francisco chances of winning the NFC West significantly. San Francisco is now the -110 odds on favorite in the NFC West odds.

Is McCaffrey a Wise Investment?

On talent alone, McCaffrey is work the risk. Firstly, he didn’t cost the 49ers anything off their active roster. Secondly, the NFC is wide open this season. Yes, the Eagles are 6-0. But they aren’t a battle-tested team.

The 49ers have been to the NFC Championship Game in two of the past three seasons. San Francisco knows how to win. At 3-3, the 49ers are in a three-way tie for the NFC West lead. There’s only four NFC teams with a better record than San Francisco.

Injuries are obviously a big question, but when he's been on the field, Christian McCaffrey has been wildly productive.
In his last 16 games, despite all the injuries and issues with the Panthers offense, he racked up 1,060 rushing and 769 receiving yards with 11 touchdowns.

Adding an injury-prone RB to an injury-prone roster could absolutely blow up spectacularly in disastrous form. At the same time, there’s no superpower squad in the NFL this season. If there ever was a year to roll the dice and go for it, this year is it.
