Both teams that finished third in their respective divisions last season square off on Saturday night. Tampa Bay vs Pittsburgh highlights a packed day of NHL action.
The Lightning dropped their season opener 3-1 then beat Columbus. The Penguins are playing their second game after defeating Arizona on Thursday night.
The two teams can score and prevent goals, as they were both in the top-ten in scoring differential last year. There’s a good chance that this Lightning vs Penguins matchup may see a few more goals than usual.

Tampa Bay Lightning Betting Analysis
Tampa Bay opened up a step slow in their 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers. Andrei Vasilevskiy was arguably the only Lightning player other than Steven Stamkos to show up. The second game was better against Columbus as the offense stepped up. That result was an easy 5-2 Lightning win after five goals were scored by Tampa and Columbus in the first period.
Stamkos scores his second goal of the game, his third goal in the first two games of the season

At this point, the Lightning just have to relax and play their game. Worrying about the opponent and getting sucked in will only lead to defeats (see the Rangers game at MSG).
Tampa Bay fired 39 shots on goal in Columbus, which is what they allowed in New York. Again, the key for the Lightning will be not to play slow. Safe is death.
Pittsburgh Penguins Betting Analysis
The offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins was quite the interesting one. It initially looked disastrous when Pittsburgh faced the possibility of losing both Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. Somehow, Ron Hextall and company managed to keep the team together for one more run. Pittsburgh is a team that will only be successful as long as they can stay healthy and productive offensively.
Until yesterday, Sidney Crosby had NEVER scored the first Pittsburgh Penguins goal of the season. That is a bit surprising.
I am so excited for another year of watching Sidney be Sidney. Pens are a playoff lock. #LetsGoPens

The Penguins proceeded to score two more goals before the Arizona Coyotes had the chance to counter. By that time, it was too late, Pittsburgh added a few more goals to win 6-2. They will be facing a Tampa Bay Lightning team that just played in Columbus on Friday night. One of the problems with playing the Lightning is that they can score goals in bunches. The good news is so can Pittsburgh.
Ultimately, Malkin signed a four-year deal and Letang re-upped for six years (both at $6.1 M AAV). Evgeni Malkin (+2500) is outside the top-10 along with Sidney Crosby (+3000) to win the Hart Trophy. Crosby, Malkin, and Letang versus Kucherov, Stamkos, and Hedman is worth any price of admission.

The teams squared off three times last season, with Pittsburgh winning two of the three meetings including a 5-1 rout late in the season at Tampa Bay. It does seem that the Penguins match up well against Pittsburgh when the game is not in Pittsburgh. Oh wait.
Lightning vs Penguins Prediction
Tampa Bay plays excellent on the road, especially against Pittsburgh. Do not let some of their performances fool you; when the Lightning want to turn up the heat, it gets hot quickly. Pittsburgh knows what they are up against.
Lightning vs Penguins Same-Game Parlay Picks
Pick | Odds |
---|---|
Over 6.5 Goals | -105 |
Pittsburgh First Period Three Way | +160 |
PARLAY ODDS | Â +330 |
The Lightning may rest Andrei Vasilevskiy on Saturday night. The Penguins will counter with Tristan Jarry, who is very talented. However, the last three games have seen the away team outshoot and outchance the home team. This is one of those games that expect to be full of fireworks and goals. Saturday nights are meant for goals, and Pittsburgh is rested and ready to go.
Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins Moneyline (-125), Over 6.5 Goals (-106)
