Why does something not feel right in the New York Giants vs Carolina Panthers matchup?

It’s a legitimate question to ask after the Giants shocked the Tennessee Titans on the road 21-20 last weekend, yet are only 2-point favorites at home vs Carolina.

The Panthers were less than impressive in a 26-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns. They showed flashes of offense but allowed 200+ yards rushing to the Cleveland Browns.

Both teams have some minor injury issues but nothing too significant.

It all gets underway Sunday from MetLife Stadium at 1pm ET, in a game that can be seen live on FOX.

Panthers vs Giants Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
Carolina Panthers +104 +2 (-110) Ov 43.5 (-110)
New York Giants -127 -2 (-110) Un 43.5 (-110)

Odds as of September 17th from Barstool Sportsbook

New York’s odds actually have waddled between a single point to two points.

As you may not have expected, the NFL Betting Trends skew wildly for the road team. A whopping 86% of the bets placed are for the Panthers to cover the spread and win outright.

The total has inched up a bit to 43.5 but has stayed in the low 40’s throughout the week. The OVER is getting hit hard at 84%.

It’s expected to be sunny with a few clouds, with a high near 85 degrees at kickoff.

Panthers Betting Outlook

Perhaps the best news for Panthers fans is that expectations will be low heading to play the Giants this Sunday. After all, last year, Carolina was embarrassed 25-3 in this matchup. Their only points came on the Panthers’ opening drive.

That was only because Coach Matt Rhule went for it on fourth-and-one from their own 38. Rhule is not afraid to take chances to win.

Baker Mayfield did rebound in the fourth quarter and almost led Carolina to a win against his former Cleveland Browns’ teammates.

What could really help the quarterback would be some life in the ground game, which was effectively dormant in Cleveland.

The Pats were held to 2.8 yards per carry and just 54 yards for the entire contest.

On top of Mayfield’s early mistakes, the Carolina Panthers attempted just 19 runs compared to 27 passes.

Carolina’s defense was less stout against the run, though, as they got gouged for 217 yards on 39 carries.

Giants Betting Outlook

Back at home, it will be a weird site for fans, with a Giants team that started 1-0 for the first time in six seasons.

The Brian Daboll era started just about as unexpected as could be in Tennessee.

Daniel Jones started off poorly in the first half but righted things in the second half. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Of course, Jones is not on the road this week. He is at home where things are less than stellar.

Thankfully, the quarterback has some help potentially as Saquon Barkley arrived in Week 1 and helped lead the Giants to more than 200 yards rushing on the road in Week 1.

The Giants ran 32 times for a total of 235 yards. Now, 164 came from Barkley alone along with six more catches for 30 yards. The offensive line opened up holes for the running back for the first time in what felt like three seasons.

The only bad news was that New York took 2 1/2 quarters to get going last Sunday. That cannot keep happening even against a team like the Carolina Panthers.

This mantra is something that helped all the New York running backs and could serve them well if the Giants stick to a more balanced game plan on Sunday.

Panthers vs Giants Pick

The Giants lost five of their eight games at home against the spread last year. One of those three wins was against Carolina, who will have revenge on their minds.

Carolina knows they have much to improve on, especially when it comes to their run defense, and Baker Mayfield now has a week under his belt with the Panthers’ offense.

The concern is that run/pass balance with the Giants. Can New York keep feeding the ball to their runners, which would allow Daniel Jones to make fewer mistakes? That is the worry.

The UNDER has hit in the last eight New York home games, as well as ten of the last 12 Giants games overall.

That’s a nice side bet to what appears to be a solid line filled with uncertainty for both teams.

The Pick: UNDER 43.5 (-110) .5 units to win 0.45 units

2022 Record: 1-0; Overall: 1-0, +1 unit
