Believe it or not, the PGA Tour offseason has already come and gone. The Tour Championship just wrapped up less than three weeks ago, but the start of a brand new campaign is already upon us.
The Fortinet Championship is the first event on the 2022-23 schedule, as golfers tee it up at the Silverado Resort & Spa in Napa Valley starting on Thursday.
There hasn’t been a ton of time for players to accumulate rust given the lack of time off, but there’s still going to be a big name or two that trunk slams on Friday. We’ve scanned the oddsboard looking for a well known player to miss the cut, so check out the odds below and our pick to target.

McCarthy to Miss the Cut
Denny McCarthy has shown flashes of potential on the PGA Tour, but this golf course simply doesn’t suit him. McCarthy is one of the lowest rated ball strikers in the field over the past 50 rounds, and ranks 130th in scoring over that time frame.

Considering Silverado Resort & Spa caters to ball strikers and birdie makers, that makes McCarthy a terrible fit this week. Denny McPutts, as he’s commonly referred to, does his best work on and around the greens, but that skillset is minimized at this track. You need no further proof than the fact that Brendan Steele, Cameron Champ and Emiliano Grillo, three atrocious putters, have all won here over the past five years.
It also doesn’t help that McCarthy’s form to close out the season was inconsistent. He missed three of his past six cuts, losing 6.6 strokes ball striking, and 5.6 strokes tee to green at the BMW Championship.
Denny McCarthy’s Career Results at Fortinet Championship
Year | Result | SG Total |
---|---|---|
2021 | MC | -3.6 |
2020 | MC | -0.3 |
2018 | MC | -5.0 |
2017 | MC | -4.1 |
As for this tournament, McCarthy has played it four times in the past five years, failing to make the weekend on all four occasions.
Pick: Denny McCarthy to Miss the Cut (+160)
Fortinet Championship Make the Cut Parlay
Let’s focus now on golfers who do set up nicely for this track. Taylor Pendrith was the headliner of our Fortinet Championship sleepers and longshots betting card this week, and he looks like a solid anchor for our make-the-cut parlay.
Pendrith closed the season with eight straight made cuts, and five top-13 finishes in his final six starts. He leads the field in total strokes gained and strokes gained off the tee over the past 24 rounds, and ranks seventh in scoring.
There were 15 golfers who gained at least 2+ strokes per round in 37%+ of rounds last season.
Those 15 golfers accounted for 27 of the 48 available wins including all four majors.

Let’s pair Pendrith with Steele, who’s never missed the cut here in eight trips, taking home the trophy twice. Next, let’s add Maverick McNealy, who finished runner-up at this event last year, and Trey Mullinax who closed the season on fire.
Mullinax won the Barbasol and finished fifth and 12th in his two playoff starts. He ranks second in scoring over the past 24 rounds in this field and 10th in driving distance.
Taylor Montgomery will be our penultimate pick, fresh off a fantastic Korn Ferry Tour season that earned him his PGA Tour card. Montgomery led the KFT in scoring, while finishing 15th in driving distance and 21st in greens in regulation.

We’ll round out our parlay with Chez Reavie, who typically plays his best golf in California, and is riding a string of eight straight made cuts at this tournament.
Add it all up and we’re looking at a handsome +903 pay day if all five of our golfers make it through to the weekend.
Pick: Make the Cut Parlay: Pendrith, Steele, McNealy, Mullinax, Montgomery & Reavie (+903)
