If you blinked, you may have missed the shortest offseason in professional sports. We’re of course talking about the PGA Tour, and less than three weeks after the 2021-22 season wrapped up, a new campaign tees off on Thursday.

The Fortinet Championship is the first official event on the 2022-23 calendar, and as usual it hasn’t drawn the strongest field. None of the game’s top-15 players in the world are here, and just three of the top-25 decided to make the trip.

That’s left us with a wide open betting board to choose from, and our sleepers and longshots card starts with a man just recently named to his first Presidents Cup team.

That would be Taylor Pendrith at +3000, which may not be a household name to some. The Canadian, however, closed the most recent season on a tear and sets up nicely for this track.

Pendrith Worth Every Penny

Silverado Resort & Spa, which contests this event, can be taken apart by bombers. The track plays just over 7,100 yards as a Par-72, with four reachable Par-5’s. It features some of the hardest fairways to hit on Tour, but the rough isn’t penal. As a result, big hitters can simply bomb and gouge their way to success.

Pendrith is absolutely capable of deploying that strategy. He ranks first in the field in strokes gained off the tee over the past 24 rounds, and first in total strokes gained. He’s eighth in driving distance and 10th in greens in regulation during that same stretch, while only six players have scored better. If you’re running a model this week, he’s the name it’s going to spit out.

It’s one thing to drive it a mile, but you’re going to need strong approach play to bring home a title. Pendrith checks that box as well ranking sixth in proximity over his past 24 rounds. He’s had at least the share of a 54-hole lead twice in 2022 already, and I’m betting this is the week he gets that elusive victory.

This Track Is Money for Mullinax

Another big hitter poised for success this week is Trey Mullinax. He broke through in July with his first Tour win at the Barbasol, and has performed incredibly well ever since.

Mullinax ranks second in scoring over the past 24 rounds and fourth in total strokes gained. He’s 10th in driving distance over that stretch and 11th in ball striking.

The 30-year-old ended the season with a fifth and 12th place showing in his two playoff starts, and now gets to tee it up versus a much softer field. A top-10 is definitely within reach, and he’s also worth a sprinkle in the outright market.

Fortinet Championship Top-20 Finish Value Picks

1.  Cameron Champ (+330): If he putts well he pays this off, if he doesn’t it will be an uphill battle. Champ won here in 2020 and ranks eight in the field in strokes gained off the tee and 17th in ball striking over the past 24 rounds. He led the Tour in driving distance last season, and ranks third in Par-5 efficiency over the last eight months.
2. Luke List (+380): His recent form isn’t great, but this is a ridiculous price on List. Don’t forgot he won at Torrey Pines in January, and is still one of the game’s premier ball strikers. List ranks second in the field in ball striking and strokes gained tee to green over his last 50 rounds, and third in strokes gained off the tee and on approach.
