Following a two-week hiatus, the PGA Tour is back in action to tee off the 2022-23 season, in Napa, California for the Fortinet Championship. Just three top-25 ranked players are competing, in Hideki Matsuyama, Max Homa and Corey Conners. Homa is the defending champion, and is favored to lead after the opening 18 holes this week.
With the field not comprised of many top-tier players, it allows plenty of opportunities for sleepers and longshots to make some noise to start the campaign.

The forecast calls for it to be mainly sunny all day. Temperatures will be mid 50’s for those teeing it up first, hitting mid 70’s for those playing in the afternoon. The wind will be more docile in the morning, with barely any gusts, with that reaching ten miles per hour for those teeing it up later.
A benefit for those teeing it up in the morning is the exact same as it is every week – less bumpy greens with fewer players chewing them up.
Cam Davis Finished Strong
Cam Davis (7:44am tee time) concluded the PGA Tour season on a strong note over a series of tournaments. He amassed a five event stretch where his worst result was a tie for 16th, before a T-35th in the BMW Championship.
Nine of his final twelve opening days he posted a score in the 60’s, including five of the last six stroke play events.
Cam Davis’ Strokes Gained Ranks Last Eight Opening Rounds
Ball Striking | Total | Approach | Tee-To-Green | Short Game | Putting |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 13 | 17 |
In his last 24 overall rounds, he’s sixth in both total strokes gained, plus tee-to-green.
Pick: Cameron Davis (+3000)
Denny McCarthy A Quick Starter
Denny McCarthy (7:22am) ended last campaign by stringing together six top-30’s in his last nine times teeing it up. Included in that were three top-7’s, with one of those being at the U.S. Open, and a pair of top-30’s in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
He made a habit of getting off to great starts, as he ranks fourth best (of those competing) in Thursday scoring average last season at an average of 69.25.
2021-22 PGA Tour First Round Scoring Average Leaders
Golfer | Average Score | Odds |
---|---|---|
6. Matt Kuchar | 68.50 | +5000 |
14. Wyndham Clark | 69.21 | +5000 |
15. Jason Day | 69.22 | +6500 |
16. Denny McCarthy | 69.25 | +4000 |
17. Webb Simpson | 69.26 | +6000 |
23. Patton Kizzire | 69.32 | +13000 |
26. Lee Hodges | 69.43 | +9000 |

35. Davis Riley | 69.57 | +3500 |
36. Max Homa | 69.59 | +2200 |
McCarthy is known for being a savant on the greens, where he ranked second in strokes gained: putting, which will come in handy to yield the lowest score in the opening round.
Pick: Denny McCarthy (+4000)
Stephan Jaeger An Intriguing Longshot
In the first group out is Stephan Jaeger (7:00am) and he finished off last season playing quite well. His last three tournaments yielded finishes of 5th, T-13th and T-46th.
The last twelve rounds has shown that the German is playing a recent well-rounded game.
Stephan Jaeger’s Strokes Gained Ranks Last Twelve Rounds
Total | Approach | Tee-To-Green | Ball Striking | Putting | Short Game |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 5 | 8 | 12 | 15 | 16 |
In those three events, he picked up a combined twelve shots tee-to-green on his contemporaries and gained strokes on the greens in each instance. Ten of his last twelve rounds have been in the 60’s, making him an intriguing longshot to jump ahead early.
Pick: Stephan Jaeger (+8000)
