What a week of college football. The dogs were barking in Week 2. Stunning upsets speckled the college football landscape as underdogs reset the National Championship odds on Saturday.
Remind me if you’ve heard this one before, lowly Appalachian State is paid a pile of money by a Power 5 school to visit. The Mountaineers shock the college football world and come away with a victory. App State did just that on Saturday. Marshall, meanwhile, waltzed into South Bend and took down Notre Dame. The Irish offense once again came up short — this time at home — against an unranked opponent, as a 20-point favorite.
There was something in the water in Texas this weekend, as down the street from A&M, the Longhorns nearly pulled off what would have been a monumental victory. Texas hung with the number one ranked Alabama for 59 minutes in Austin, before losing on a last-second field goal.
Texas A&M and Notre Dame are now completely out of the National Championship race, as you can see from the updated odds table below.

Mountaineers Upend Aggies National Championship Hopes
Appalachian State put an end to Michigan, I mean, Texas A&M’s College Football Playoff dreams on Saturday.
Entering the game as 17.5-point favorites, this is surely one of the biggest upsets in Aggies history. Coach Jimbo Fisher must be beside himself this morning. Lamenting the fact that his top-ranked recruiting class just got taken to the woodshed by a team that lost to North Carolina last weekend.
Try telling Appalachian State fans that the #SEC just means more!!!

Camerun People ran for 112 yards, quarterback Chase Brice threw for a touchdown and the Appalachian State Mountaineers took advantage of two turnovers to stun the Aggies in College Station. Head coach Shawn Clark, who makes ten times less than Jimbo Fisher, just wanted his team to believe. They did far more than that on Saturday.
With the loss, Texas A&M tumbles from +2500 to +15000 in the National Championship odds.
Alabama Holds On
The visit to Texas did not go as expected for the Crimson Tide on Saturday. As 20.5-point favorites, many saw this as a walk in the park for the number one ranked Alabama squad. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses for Nick Saban’s crew in this one.
The Longhorns drew a record crowd on Saturday and rallied behind their fans all afternoon. Texas’ defense was the best unit on the field for large parts of the game, harassing Tide quarterback Bryce Young throughout. The Longhorns even held Young to under 100 passing yards at halftime.

Only a magical play from Bryce Young late in the fourth quarter helped Alabama escape with the victory. The Tide were uncharacteristically sloppy all afternoon. As dropped passes and penalties killed their drives. Alabama once punted on six straight possessions and were stuffed on a late fourth and one.
For once, Alabama looked vulnerable and beatable. The Tide will go back to the drawing board after this one and look to bounce in Week 3 vs Louisana-Monroe. The Tide fell from +180 favorites to +200 — level with Georgia — in the National Championship odds.
Other Week 2 Notes
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost at home as 20-point favorites, sending new head coach Marcus Freeman spiraling to an 0-3 record. Marshall defensive back Steven Gilmore, brother of the Colts Stephon, returned an interception for a touchdown late to spur the Thundering Herd to a stunning 26-21 victory. The Fighting Irish are completely out of the National Championship picture, and at this point, are fighting to keep their heads above water.

Number 4 Michigan once again looked strong with a 56-10 beatdown of Hawaii. The Wolverines rose from +4000 to +2500 in the latest National Championship odds.
If you’re looking for a sleeper to bet on to win the national title, look no further than Lincoln Riley’s USC program. The Trojans flattened the rival Stanford Cardinal 41-28 in a game that was not nearly as competitive as the final score would suggest. Star quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 341 yards and 4 touchdowns in a comfortable USC victory.
