Alcaraz Eyeing No. 1

The 19-year-old has been the talk of the town at the US Open, as he’s having a very impressive tournament. He also has a No. 1 ranking on the line.

Alcaraz defeated 11th seed Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6(7)-7,6(0)-7, 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted over five hours. This was a match that at any given time looked like it could go either way. Both players were broken multiple times, but it was in the fourth set that the 19-year-old won the last couple of games to force that fifth and final set.

In that last set, Alcaraz managed to pull away, and ultimately win.

This is the 19-year-old’s first Grand Slam semifinal.

Last American in the Tournament

Home favorite and last American in the tournament, Tiafoe, has only dropped one set on route to the semifinals at the US Open. The 22nd seed upset Andrey Rublev in straight sets on Wednesday, winning 7(7)-6(3), 7(7)-6(0), 6-4.

The 24-year-old recorded 18 aces with just three double faults on route to his win.

Since the third round, Tiafoe has been the underdog in all his matches. He went on to defeat Diego Schwartzman, Rafael Nadal, and Rublev. All higher seeds than him, and all the favorites in their matches.

Tiafoe is now the first American man to make the US Open semifinals since 2006.

Alcaraz and Tiafoe’s one and only meeting came last year, where the two faced each other in the round of 64 in Spain. Tiafoe won that match in straight sets.
