Inter’s 3-2 defeat at the weekend at the hands of their city rivals, AC Milan, will have hurt. It was doubly painful as the same opponents narrowly pipped them to the Serie A title last season.

It was a disappointing end to Simone Inzaghi’s first in charge at Inter, and a lukewarm start to this campaign, including the derby defeat, has left them down in eighth place in Serie A.

A win over the mighty Bayern is much-needed in order to kick-start their season, although their cause has not been helped by an injury to striker Romelu Lukaku, who re-signed on loan from Chelsea.

Inconsistent Inter

In addition to Bayern, Inter also face Barcelona and the minnows of Viktoria Plzen in their UCL group, so a place in the top two is far from a given. A good start to this Champions League campaign appears vital but these are testing times for the Blue and Blacks.

A really disappointing 3-1 defeat against Inzaghi’s former team, Lazio, two weeks ago was followed with a win over newly-promoted Cremonese but they remain worryingly inconsistent, as evidenced in the derby game.

Minor Blip for Bayern

Having won this trophy as recently as 2020, Bayern still has the taste of success to feed off and despite losing the goalscoring talents of Robert Lewandowski in the summer (to Barcelona), they will be looking to go deep in this tournament.

While a draw in the San Siro would be no disaster for Bayern, a run of only one win in four games would be unusual. Defeat, on the other hand, would be regarded as disastrous but, in reality, their problems are minor. They have already hit the net 26 times this season.
