Bob Melvin will send Mike Clevinger to the mound, while Dave Roberts counters with Andrew Heaney. The home team is the favorite in this one.

San Diego vs Los Angeles Probable Pitchers
Clevinger hasn’t been quite as dominant for San Diego this season as he was when he came up with Cleveland, but he’s still been pretty good. The Friars have gone 11-5 in the 31-year-old’s turns this season, with five of those being of the quality variety.
He went five innings in his previous start against the Giants on Monday, allowing five hits, a pair of earned runs and a walk while striking out three in a 6-5 victory. He enters Sunday’s primetime tilt as the unlikely underdog.

The Dodgers knew they were taking a calculated risk when signing Heaney in the offseason as a free agent due to his injury history. The lefty missed three months between April and June — then another month in early summer — with shoulder inflammation. But since returning in late July, the 31-year-old has paid dividends. LA went 5-1 in his August starts as he sported a 1-1 mark and 3.29 ERA.

Heaney only has two quality starts among his ten turns this season. But when you have a lineup supporting you like the Dodgers, you don’t need to toss at least six innings and allow three earned runs or less in every outing. He went five innings against the Mets on Tuesday, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and no walks while striking out eight in a 4-3 victory.
Clevinger vs Heaney Stats
5-5 | Record | 2-1 |
3.59 | ERA | 2.12 |
4.12 | xERA | 3.04 |
20.4% | K% | 35.4% |
Prior to beating the Boys in Blue 7-1 on Friday in the series opener, the Friars had dropped seven of the last eight games to the Dodgers. But on the strength of three home runs by three different players (Manny Machado, Brandon Drury and Jurickson Profar) — all with at least one runner on base — San Diego sent LA to its first three-game losing streak since June.

Prior to Saturday’s tilt, Melvin’s group had won six of seven games. Machado has led the way for the offense over the last week, batting .455 with three homers and 10 RBI during the stretch.
Meantime, the Dodgers have only scored five runs in their last three games after reaching 52 games over .500 following a 4-3 victory over the Mets on Tuesday. But when you have as large of a division lead at this point in the season, Roberts shouldn’t worry too much. He gave All-Star Trea Turner a day off on Friday, the first time Turner wasn’t in the starting lineup all season. Once LA clinches the division, fellow All-Star Freddie Freeman will probably get a day off.
The @Dodgers lost to the Padres 7-1 tonight, snapping LA's streak of 228 consecutive regular-season games without losing by more than 5 runs.
That streak was 80 games longer than any other such streak in MLB history (next longest: 148 by Pirates from 1979-80).

Mookie Betts has been the best player on the team — and possibly the NL — this season. Entering Saturday’s game, the former AL MVP was batting .279 with 32 homers and 70 RBI in 2022 — all while playing stellar defense.
The Padres have +2200 odds to win the Fall Classic, while the Dodgers are the favorites at +350 in the World Series odds.

Padres vs Dodgers Prediction
Both teams have performed well this season when their respective starter on Sunday is on the bump.
But with the Padres needing wins a little bit more than the Dodgers right now, I’ll go with the underdog in this spot.
Pick: Padres +142 ML
